Program Repair Shop and Red Flags

The O'Reilly folks asked me to write a short article about the new Program Repair Shop and Red Flags class I'll be giving at the Open Source Convention. Some of you might find the article fun and interesting:

In this year's Perl track, I'll be doing a new class, called "Perl Program Repair Shop and Red Flags." In the class, I look at some examples of a beginner's code, and then I go through the code, a bit at a time, explaining what is wrong with it and how to make it better. At the end, the program does the same thing, but is shorter, easier to understand, more robust, and more flexible. Hence "Program Repair Shop."

Wow! This is one of those which everyone could benefit from.

Any way to sneak this into the YAPC schedule or will O'Reilly not like that?

I didn't suggest it to Kevin for YAPC this year for two reasons. First, as you suggest, I didn't want to cannibalize the TPC audience. But also because I ran a poll on my web site to find out what people most wanted to see at YAPC, and the Program Repair Shop class lost out to Stolen Secrets of the Wizards of the Ivory Tower.

Since I had given the Stolen Secrets class at TPC4 and there was more demand for it at YAPC, the choice was pretty clear. Program Repair Shop will probably be at YAPC next year.

If you want to see it sooner, there are at least two ways to do that: Get your local Perl Mongers group to take up a collection to pay my travel expenses to come to where you are, and I will give it for free. (This is a great promotion for the group.) Or get your employer to hire me to come to where you are and give classes for their employees. (Send me email if this is a possibility.)
