psr473 has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

On my solaris "perl 5.6.1" version is installed.

When I tried to install Spreasheet::WriteExcel module by using cpan shell by using below commands

perl -MCPAN -e shell cpan> install Spreasheet::WriteExcel

the process is running for more than 5hrs, so we killed the process.

I think it is installing newer version perl also, apart from the specified module.

Can any one tell me whether the above command will istall newer version perl or not?

Thanks in advance for your quick replies.

    It would probably be wise to watch and see what it's doing... but yes, those very (very) old CPANs will install new versions of perl, sometimes without asking. The very best way to deal with this would be to install a newer version of perl (if possible) from a solaris binary repo.

      Thank you Paul

      I don't have the permissions to install the modules, so I asked the another guy who is having the persimissons to install. That is the reason I don't have log what happened while installling.

      Once again Thanks.

      you can try download from CPAN and install it. So, when you run make test it will show clearly the errors.
