Easing the pain of being fresh out of votes

The symptoms

Here's a thought. If you hit the CB at the right time, you'll find a crowd of junkies hanging around for their latest votes fix, whether it be European morning or US morning. Whatever.

I tend to log on at pretty much the same time each morning, but during the week, the time at which my votes come down the wire arrives later and later in the day, because I'm never here and the very minute the votes kick in. Things slowly drift out of phase, especially if I log in at a strange time on the weekend.

I wind up having to go cold turkey for 24 hours to get things straightened out. Are these the ravings of an addict or what?

The fix

Instead of having the votes renewed every twenty four hours, renew the votes at a rate of number of votes at given level divided by twenty four hours, until the maximum amount is attained.

For instance, a novice is allowed 5 votes per day. Thus, once a vote is cast, a new vote will be come available 24/5 hours later (i.e. 288 minutes, or 4 hours, 48 minutes). A monk, with 16 votes per day gets a new vote every 90 minutes.

If you know you have at most only thirty six minutes to wait (oh... to be a saint), the withdrawal symptoms aren't quite as severe, as opposed to wondering whether you should go to bed and hoping they're there in the morning or pulling an all-nighter.

Alternatively, you could simply vote more discriminately or budget your voting. For example, if you limit yourself to one vote per hour, you'd get pretty much the same effect with no effort on the part of Fearless (assuming you sleep/eat/havealife ~four hours a day).

I have a better suggestion. I don't ususally use most of my votes. So if there's something you really want to vote on, send me email and I will vote for it however you want for only $1 per vote.

Y'know, sometimes, it makes a heckuva lot more sense to change yourself rather than the world. The Stoics seemed to say that's always the way it should go. But let's not be extremists. Sometimes, you should change the world to conform to your desires, but often enough, you should adjust your desires to conform to what the world is going to give you.

I think this may just be one of those situations.

Saving vroom time and effort since 6 minutes ago

One thing that I'm itching to write is a system whereby, on your computer, a script gathers the newest nodes and displays them; for each node, you get 5 voting options, "Definite ++" ,"Possible ++", "No opinion", "Possible --", and "Definite --". You would mark these as you want, but these votes would not actually be cast until a fixed time (settable to right before your votes are refreshed); anything definite would automatically be cast for you, everything else left unvoted for. This would allow you to mark articles throughout the day that you think you want to vote for but won't be sure until you see what else is available. Of course I've not gotten anywhere close to writing this yet, but it's still an idea...

A couple of related points :

1. There seems to be a "cheat" whereby if a node has reaches the best nodes of the day, you can see what it's reputation is, even if you haven't voted for it yet. Not sure if this is intended or a feature.

2. When you have used all of your votes, the info re. reputation goes away, so you can't see the rep. of nodes you have voted for. Fair enough that it disables the voting ++/--, but would still like to be able to see the rep. of those nodes.

1) There are more cheats than that. They are features. The reputation isn't a matter of national security. It is just hidden from casual viewing until you vote the node in a limited attempt to reduce "bandwagon voting" (though I'm getting the impression that seeing the reputation before hand could lead to a lot more "voting against the rep" which would level out reps rather than widening the distribution).

2) No, sorry, you got that wrong. When you run out of votes the voting "buttons" disappear but the reputations of any nodes that you've already voted on are still visible (and I actually stayed up late getting rid of all of my votes to verify that this hasn't changed since the last time I used up all of my votes some dark ages ago q-: ).

The suffering of spending those last votes fades when gaining levels... I currently have 25 votes a day, and some days it's pretty hard spending em all :)
