It helps immensely if one is also conversant with the scale of the project that Brooks is writing about. OS/360 was a monumental achievement: arguably, all IBM's non-Linux OS's are still based on the OS/360 concepts, though we've gone from a Cambrian weird wonder to a velociraptor at this point.
