This not a philosopy of progamming article or book.
But programming is based on languages (albeit not natural
ones) so it is good to have a command of the basic concepts.
So I recommend
Programming Languages:
Concepts and Constructs, 2nd Ed.
Ravi Sethi
He presents the concepts in context by giving examples
in different languages.
I have the first edition, I don't know what is new in the 2nd one.
