perl2008, I'm sure you must understand the concept behind posting questions in a public forum? Perhaps not, let me explain...when you post a question in a public forum, you are openly inviting all those who chose to reply, to do so. I happen to know of a secret weapon against the big bad evil AnonymousMonk, want to know what it is? Stop posting questions and figure it out yourself. Otherwise, you're inviting, as I said before, let me hammer this in, all who chose to reply, to do so. That is really the point, right?

Another thing to remember, is that coding is a very intense, time-consuming project. Most of the people on this forum, are not here just "chillin'", they are researching, because they are heavily involved in several projects, most of which actually pay for their time. So, when they stop what they're doing, losing track sometimes of the roll they were on, to help someone about a point they are familiar with, and then see it was a waste of time, because it was something you could have easily figured out yourself, some people do tend to get a bit irritated. Some even tell you about that irritation in their posts, which again, you are inviting, by posting the question.

A lot of good people have taken time out of their busy lives and projects to help not only you, but myself and others as well. Please don't disrespect them and their efforts, with these pointless posts which contain nothing but rude, disrespectful and annoying words. Every time you do, the person who was going to donate their time (for free, remember) to help a fellow coder in need, might be less likely to care next time. So, this type of thing, can needlessly be a disruption in a nice community we've got access to here.

I'm just as new as you are, and have asked some very basic questions here. I have been told several times that I should have done something different before asking, or asked a different way, but rather than be upset about that, I try and pay attention, because the basic fact of the matter is, these people know a hell of a lot more than me about Perl, and asking about Perl. You have a wonderful resource here, which, if used correctly, can enable you to become an excellent programmer. Show a little gratitude, man up and understand, you don't have to like someone, to learn from them. Because, like it or not, we all have something you can learn from.

      Well said! ++

A program should be light and agile, its subroutines connected like a string of pearls. The spirit and intent of the program should be retained throughout. There should be neither too little or too much, neither needless loops nor useless variables, neither lack of structure nor overwhelming rigidity." - The Tao of Programming, 4.1 - Geoffrey James

Now that was a great post!

Might not be directly related to your post, but one of my opinion is here about perlmonks and why we have to share.
In my perspective sharing is always required during learning(anything) because, unless you share you are in your own island where you think that you are the king, but when you get to share you will get to know the mistakes that you have done in the process of learning(definitely), it helps to correct yourself.
I end up with a quote:
An expert is someone who has made every mistake.

-- In accordance with the prarabdha of each, the One whose function it is to ordain makes each to act. What will not happen will never happen, whatever effort one may put forth. And what will happen will not fail to happen, however much one may seek to prevent it. This is certain. The part of wisdom therefore is to stay quiet.

Anonymous Monk is who owns all postings by people who are not logged on. It's not one single user.

However it seems that you have the tendency to insult those who want to help you, just because somebody didn't give the answer you wanted (and a very reasonable answer, at that). (That said, if there's somebody insulting you, chances are that the postings will get deleted.)

So please think about your own behaviour before you complain about other people's behaviour. Nobody gets paid here to write code for you - if somebody helps you it's all volunteer's work.

    Update:

It seems like Anonymous Monk, Martin & moritz is a team or the same person posting under different names

In German there's a nice word called Geisterfahrer, the translation would be motorist driving against the traffic on motorways.

Metaphorically speaking I see just one Geisterfahrer, you see plenty of them. Does that tell you anything about your direction of driving?

Doesn't Geisterfahrer literally mean "spirit driver"?
        "spirit" or "ghost", yes.

I believe that, etymologically, the word is more related to ghost/phantom/illusion (although there is some overlapping semantics with spirit, of course) — in the sense that, under normal circumstances (if everyone abided by the traffic rules) Geisterfahrer should not exist.  So, in the unexpected and (hopefully) rare event that you happen to encounter one, you might at first actually feel like you can't trust your eyes, i.e. seeing a ghost or phantom...

perl2008, this is the sure fire way of getting the Anonymous cowards to harrass you even more. You are letting them know that they are aggravating you. The best thing to do is just ignore it....and let the intelligence of the other readers filter out any unwarranted attacks. Of course, having someone say "read the documentation and check the package for known bugs" is not harrasment, but something all new monks are constantly reminded of. (If that is the node you are pissed about).

By the way, many times Anonymous Monks are Monks who are at coffee shops , or whatever, and prefer not to login and reveal their passwords. You should be glad that they even notice your nodes...... when the real harrassment comes, you will receive no replies. :-(

Those are truly golden words. I noticed that many geeks, like myself, have hard time figuring out what is ethically, socially, and emotionally acceptable, what is a norm, and are reacting inadequately in otherwise normal debates. In essence, your message is "grow up", but what also matters is not only the message, but the confident and positive tone you chose. I personally really wish there were more people who would tolerate my inadequacies, and provide guidance, so the process of my own growing up would not be that painful. Thank you again, and a humble ++ for you :)

A wise person recognizes help and correction and accepts them graciously; a fool responds with foolish words (in this case, unenforceable threats).

Yeah, play nice, you're making the rest of us fools look bad!

STAY AWAY from my postings. I don't need your advice/help

Posting that into a public section means you are telling that to all of us. Is that what you want - ignore you?
Otherwise, there's the private message feature (see PerlMonks FAQ, look for "Messaging on PerlMonks") to settle any quarrel between individuals. Anonymous Monk can not send or receive messages, though - they're a crowd.

    Haha. Funny troll is funny.

I have looked at several of the nodes you have posted (easily accessible here as others have already said) and am on Anonymous Monk's side. He is truly a good guy once you get to know him. Sure, he may ask a ton of questions, but he also answers a ton of other people's. Maybe give him a second chance?

You can only control your own behavior, so be on your best behavior and do not worry about others' behavior. You can not fight fire with fire.

This apparently can never be said enough: Do Not Feed the Trolls!!!! And with your post, well, your troll is eating a veritable feast right now!!! Note that that thread contains info on how to hide posts from specfic users.

I also suggest next time that you ask in the chatterbox for advice before posting. For example, if there is a serious problem then figuring out who to privately message about it instead of giving your troll a feast would have been a much better tactic. And if that had not worked you could post a question like "Who should I contact to report a problem user?" which would at least minimize the damage. Good luck and remember that the only way to kill a troll is to starve it to death (ignore it).

Update: As a side note, marto and moritz are both respected members of the community. If you got on their bad side then you should ask yourself what you did to cause that to happen.

Now really; what is the point of reaping this post at this late date? Now we have a dozen replies that have no context (except of course, that it's easily retrieved with a bit of inconvenience).

I thought it was hilarious; hard to tell if the guy is actually sociopathic or just a troll. In either case, it was a useful post, although in an opposite way from the author's intent (i.e. as a negative example that various monks can hang positive assertions on).

Ooh, boy, more threats, I am fearful of the next time you "approach me"...meh....not really! You know why? I have the NodeReaper on my team and he will step on your border anytime!

I tell you loudly POST NO RUBBISH ANd YOU SHALL RECEIVE NONE IN RETURN. Maybe that will finally get into your thick head and stop you from acting like a 13 year old bash.org-monkey.

But please, bring on the legal steps you promised last time. My popcorn is getting cold.
