Perl Builder 2.0

Hi

I am new to Perl and very new to this monastery. I am trying to find a (hopefully free or not expensive) IDE/debugger for Perl running on Win 2000.

I have been searching around the net and came across a 14 day trial of Perl Builder 2.0.

Has anyone used this? Or can some kind soul recommend something else?

Yes I use it and like it. It will run under Win32 and Linux which is convenient and is the pick of the bunch IMHO. There are plenty of cheaper alternatives that also do a good job but none seem as complete - you have the link. It is expensive though but sometimes you get what you pay for. The code it generates sucks but other than that it's OK. It has lots of good widgets to play with.

There is also the Komodo IDE interface, which can be found at ActiveState. I tried an earlier version of it, and found it to be ok.

I tried a recent version of Komodo on a tired old Pentium 90. My advice -> get a fast box if you want this beast to run in real time - the performance was so bad you could simply not use it. This same box runs Perl Builder 2 no problem.

One note, scripts run in PB2 run about 100 times slower than from the command line. This is not an issue in most cases but can be for computationally intensive tasks. Easy enough to run stuff from the command prompt anyway, even while you are editing them in PB2.

I noticed that to. This machine is a P2 Celeron-333 Mhz, with 32MB RAM, and it was slower than molasses. The other downside I noticed is that you had to download their ActivePython as well, since the IDE was written in Python.

Since you are using Win2k, I highly recommend ConTEXT. Not only is it an awesome perl editor (syntax highlighting, auto-indent, bracket matching, etc.), but it's also an awesome editor for about two dozen other programming languages too (same features). It's been absoultely invaluable to the work that I do. And the best part is that it is free ;)
