Do you really have to use perl for this? I mean, I love the language and everything, but there are much better ways to do this kind of thing. Like: http://stat.ethz.ch/R-manual/R-patched/library/stats/html/Multinom.html or: http://www.mathworks.com/help/stats/mnrnd.html I don't know your situation, but I don't think mathematics and statistics is really perl's strong point. Maybe it makes sense to use something designed for that?
