    Do you use Bitcoin?
    • Yes
    • No
    • What is Bitcoin?
Update: Alternate form suggested by marto:

    Do you use a cryptocurrency?

    • Yes
    • No
    • A crypto-what?

Given the recent latest crash, perhaps "Do you use cryptocurrency" would be wise, to keep the poll more generic ;)

      • What is "use"?

I have 0.50 BTC. I don't use it for anything; I mostly hang onto it for its ornamental value.

use Moops; class Cow :rw { has name => (default => 'Ermintrude') }; say Cow->new->name

I think "use" in this context means spend, acquire or trade in the currency.

Update: you .5 BTC is currently worth ~250 Euro.

      • Data and functions
      :)

And what about "The most mismatched mismatched pair is:" as the title?

Surely, Arunbear, that ought to be "The most mismatched mismatched pair are:", or possibly "The most mismatched mismatched pairs is:" ?

        :-D

A user level that continues to overstate my experience :-))
The impetus to write that poll came when i read a definitions document that used Header and Trailer. After ranting about it, i decided to post the poll here, which is more to generate discussion on this topic than provide a list of possibilities. So, to me, the word "annoying" is essential.

Regardless, i don't actually care what the title is. I figure even without a title people would get it.

Actually, i'm not quite sure what you mean by data and functions.

My favorite superfluous repetitious redundant duplicative phrase is:

    • From whence
    • Absolutely certain
    • Postpone until later
    • ATM machine
    • PIN number
    • Each and every
    • Reason why
    • Join together

Note: Many phrases that seem redundant are not always so, for example "most unique" which compares contrasts of unique items, or to be clear, for example, "later time" as opposed to "later date" which has a slightly different meaning. A phrase is truly redundant when one word, by defintion, includes the other, such as "ATM Machine" or "Each and Every" when in the same phrase.

Posted as: My favorite superfluous repetitious redundant duplicative phrase is:

Is English the same as in Dutch? Is "Print out a document" used nowadays instead of "Print a document"

Dutch knew thre: "Een document afdrukken", "Een document printen" (anglisism), or "Een document uitdraaien" (from those old boxes with forms that had holes for a tractor.

I am utterly annoyed by the zillion of people the say "Een document uitprinten". YUCK!

      Enjoy, Have FUN! H.Merijn

I think it is the same. But, i also think although in some sense redundant, the term is not truly redundant.

A printer prints a person prints out, unless the person is a living printer and rolls the ink from his fingertips. :) Normally, the out is inferred, hence your irkage (?).

      • The La Brea Tar Pits

      Cheers,
      R.

Pereant, qui ante nos nostra dixerunt!

Imagine i know nothing (shouldn't be that hard)...why is that redundant?

Tundra is not necessarily frozen, so there is no redundancy there.

      SAT or ACT test

      1 Peter 4:10

Had to read that twice. I don't think i've ever heard test postpended to SAT or ACT.

Thank you, and other responders! I've added these suggestions.

Elves work for Santa Claus. Elves are male or female. Hence, Santa's worker are Elf binaries.

I don't like the thought of being executable (those midgets do have short lives). Although, being Link-able would give me a cool sword. But that's "for Matt", which isn't Santa's real name. I'm so confused.

Not that I like this poll, but the devil and the Lord almighty are definitively missing.

Larry Wall and Santa Claus have already been mentioned.

Re: poll ideas quest 2014 (clock face)
by Arunbear (Prior) on Oct 09, 2014 at 10:03 UTC
Do you prefer analog or digital time pieces?
    • Analog
    • Digital
    • Analog / Digital combos
Updated: changed title to be more precise.

Do you count binary clocks under digital clocks (I do not). I have seen analog versions (using colored light) of binary clocks. I have also seen clocks that used the colors as used in resistor bands as digits.

update 2014-10-20: this is a clock that writes the time on a small whiteboard, erases the time and writes again (repeat). I'd say it is digital too :)

      Enjoy, Have FUN! H.Merijn
The Wikipedia article says "Most binary clocks are digital, although analog varieties exist", (and a look through Google images seems to confirm this) whereas my intent was simply to measure the preference for digital vs analog (irrespective of format).

Thinking about the current hype, you should add the options

      • smart (I don't care if it is digital or analog, as long as the vendor claims it is smart ;-) ) and
      • only working if connected to a phone

      TGIF, Rata

      24 hour

            05:23:17.nn UT
      ... and counting.

If you didn't program your executable by toggling in binary, it wasn't really programming!

There's a story behind this you might want to know.

Many years ago, I asked the gods to create a new poll ideas quest thread because the original thread got too long, longer than that famous PMD thread that anecdotally shouldn't be linked in the chatterbox because everyone following the link at the same time overloads the server. The gods agreed, and have created a new thread. Unfortunately, they have added a year number in its title. Since then, people got confused by seeing last year's number in the thread and keep asking for a new thread every year.

There's no real need to create a new one every year. In fact, it makes it more difficult to suggest poll ideas, because you have to search for suggestions in more threads.(Luckily if you know good search keywords, Super Search simply lets you search in the Quest section, but often it is more convenient to just load the full text of those threads.) Anyway, because of this confusion coming up all the time, we seem to be stuck and get a new thread every year.

Anyway, now I understand now so many commercial companies label their games or periodicals or other products with a year number in the future.

Re: poll ideas quest 2014
by chacham (Prior) on Oct 27, 2014 at 19:40 UTC

Why do no countries start with the letter X?

    • It has a negative connotation
    • The country name database uses x to denote countries ready for deletion
    • Too confusing: Would the X be vocalized as "eks" or "z"
    • For the same reason that none start with the letter W
    • It'd be a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad Country
    • Does Xanth count?

Bad poll. There are a few that start with a W, at least in the Dutch spelling:

      • Wake
      • Wallis en Futuna
      • Westelijke Sahara
      • Westsamoa
      • Windwardeilanden

      Enjoy, Have FUN! H.Merijn

The poll is about the letter X. W is mentioned in one of the poll options. :)

Also, if i understand the list correctly, only Westsamoa (Samoa) is recognized as a country. The others are territories or disputed.

Interesting. Though, the wiki calls it a continent, not a country.

The main impetus to break off some code into a separate routine is when:

    • it takes more than a screenfull to show all the code
    • it is a separate logical function
    • it is called multiple times
    • it makes testing/debugging easier
    • i think i might reuse it elsewhere
    • it makes an if statement fit on one line or just read better
    • i get paid per line of code
    • i think of a really cool name for it
    • pfft... separate routines...

    The opposite of 1 is:

    • -1
    • 0
    • Many
    • False
    • l (lower case L)
    • None of the above
      • Any of U+2474, U+2488, U+24F5, U+2776, U+3220, U+3280, U+103D1, (you might like U+AA51 :)

      Enjoy, Have FUN! H.Merijn

Heh. Though, most of those are just other ones. U+2776 is an exception being negative and all. The half-named U+AA51 is cute. Thanx.

All in all, the question is really if a number's opposite is 0 (negation of value) or the negative version of it (same amount, but below zero). The knee-jerk response is the opposite of 4 is -4. But, i believe it would be 0.

The poll specifically asks on 1 as it is the commonly used value in boolean types and allows for other humorous answers.

How many spoken languages can you speak, write, read, or understand:

    • 0
    • 1
    • 2
    • 3
    • Many

      Do programming languages count?

      Enjoy, Have FUN! H.Merijn

Edited the question to say "spoken languages". My bad.

The concept question was "how many languages to you speak," which would have been more obvious. After adding in "write, read, or understand," it became less clear. Thanx for the correction.

I wonder if knowing multiple languages has an effect on one's programming as well.
