It's a little difficult to answer your question because you didn't mention what your "work" was.

You can use perl for a variety of things. You can use it to create CGI scripts to deliver dynamic web content, to automate general system maintence or to create full blown applications. It will also run on just about any OS.

Maybe you should start by explaining (in some detail) what you're looking at perl to do for you.
