I doubt this is reliable, German „quoting“ style is almost like American (double first) and was exported to half of Europe (the other half prefers French style with « … » )

German wikipedia has a nice overview table:

Please note that here quotes are supposed to be a low/high pair „…“.

But I rarely see this nowadays in electronic context, because of the dominance of ASCII.

In the MS Office packages I know, there is a way to switch off this annoying (but yet typographically correct) behaviour. Google knows where to find instructions, you just have to remember that those stupid quotes are calles "smart quotes" in MS jargon. And when I'm in that scary area, I also switch off almost all other auto-"corrections" that mess with the way I enter text into my computer.

Oh, and by the way: I do the same with OpenOffice and LibreOffice.

Today I will gladly share my knowledge and experience, for there are no sweeter words than "I told you so". ;-)

Another fun one from Redmond is that OuthouseOutlook has the annoying tendency to "correct" -- to an — (mdash) for you. While more typographically pretty that doesn't really play nice with Getopt::Long or other such argument parsing when people naïve non-*NIX users (or even regular *NIX users) try and copy-and-paste the instructions you sent them straight into their shell.

Edit: In their defense it can be disabled, but that only helps you once you've done that.

    I miss him too.

I thought I would. Several years ago he was thinking about quitting and I helped talk him out of it in a couple of private messages. I considered him a friend. I didn’t realize he considers anyone who disagrees with him nothing. His last couple of years and sporadic moments sprinkled in before were less and less helpful—even wrong sometimes but digging in to try to bully others into agreeing—and regularly denigrating Perl passive aggressively. His rather ugly and entitled exit was a direct consequence of his degrading participation.

Everybody can tell that I often didn't like his discussion style.

I still regret losing my cool in telling him so.

      Cheers Rolf
