The bottom line (or section) of email should be:

  • Your name or initial(s)
  • The earlier thread
  • A recap of what was written
  • A line that you like
  • A little whitespace
  • Unsubscribe instructions and/or link
  • A disclaimer
  • Doesn't matter

The bottom section of an e-mail should not be

    • The full conversation including signatures, company logo's and useless disclaimers both in plain text and html (with comic sans font)
    • A 70 line disclaimer in 4 languages
    • An image that contains unclickable links with instructions of how to report abuse
    • more lines than relevant to the discussion
    • a rant about the subject
    • all of the above

IMHO no e-mail should be allowed in html

more lines than relevant to the discussion

Being threading never really caught on in email clients, having the previous emails there for a while is important. At the office, if not for the history, i would have no idea what half the conversation are talking about. Ridiculous as it may seem, the logos and fonts actually help me follow history more easily. It's big, it's gaudy, but it's also an excellent visual cue.

FWIW, gmail has threading with a decent implementation. As a nice touch, the earlier conversation is collapsed, and forwarding entire conversation becomes really easy.

      Added disclaimer. :)

How about a simple poll: Do you put your name at the bottom of emails you send?

    • Yes
    • No
    • It depends
