Why not both? There's room in the average Monks' heart for warm & fuzzy-ness, but cutthroat competition can be fun, too. I mean, the site's goal (or one of the many goals) is to teach and allow all the monks to share their skills; so cooperative contests (each team must have one member from each level through monk, or something like that) would fit in well.

On the other hand, one-on-one competition is a lot of fun, and who knows? Some of us newbies just might surprise you.

I see your point, but given that the site is run pretty much by one overworked dude, I don't know how feasible it is.

    e-mail neshura

I guess that some kind of Management By Delegation should be possible. Maybe vroom could delegate this task to a friar or abbot who gets to decide the "winners".

I don't know much about the demographics of the monastery, so I don't know how many friars and abbots we have that don't already have administrative tasks to fulfill, maybe even some monks could take this job.

I don't think that additional structural changes in the engine would be necessary at the start, these dedicated sisters and brothers could simply /MSG or email vroom their decisions (if we want delegation to work, these persons must have some power, so it's decisions and not proposals :)).

Why bother declaring a winner? People will vote up entries they particularly like, and the "winners" will be obvious. Take the recent spate of Chatterbox clients. At least three of us were writing some at the same time, and others modified our versions. It quickly became obvious that ZZamboni was the "winner", but I like to think that other (read: my) versions were useful.

I'm not trying to get all happy-feely-why-can't-we-all-win, but I don't think there is a need to delegate responsibility to anyone on this.

Don't forget about the bishops, pontiffs, and saints! We have a couple of the former, a couple of the latter, but no pontiffs yet...

I personally think something like the POTM contest would be great. I think we approched something in that spirit with the Mad Libs posting spree (spread over many nodes - sorry no links right now). Maybe have multiple awards, such as Most Efficient (i.e. fastest), Most Elegant, Shortest, and Most Obfuscated. Bonus points for winning more than one award for the same program. :)
