Why is it that the cleaning lady at the office feels an urge to remove all of the power cables and wash them in the sink? Well, we can't blame her... After all, we just told her to stay away from the keyboards, and that she did!
Seriously, I actually went to the office one weekend to see why the staging server was down and I found a power cable hanging on my window sill/handle. Sad, very sad...
Thats almost as good as my poor CS prof in college. He spent almost 2 months testing his back-up and recovery strategies for our brand new SPARC. Then he put it in the main CS lab and setup all the user accounts. It had been running less then a week when the janitor unplugged it to mop the floor. (Despite the huge sign on the plug saying, "Don't touch!")
The poor Prof, his plans all assumed he could turn the machine back on, which he couldn't. It took over a month to get that machine back up and running. (Sun systems do not like sudden power loss.)
Yikes! We had to move some of our servers to a remote location during the WTO riots (fearing terrorist attack) :) We couldn't spare anyone to stay with the servers...and at some point we couldn't communicate with them at all, so we went down to where they are and someone had pulled all the cords out of the wall...they left a note complaining that it was too hot, so they wanted all the machines off. Note was unsigned, luckily. Hmmmmm.
If you want to see an interesting look into the
old "my server/OS is more stable
than your server/OS" argument; check out the
Uptimes Project at http://www.uptimes.net/.
Based on its metrics the OS w/ the best uptime rates is: Ultrix and
the OS w/ the worst uptime rates is: Lantronix
... not suffering ill-effects from an improperly coded perl script containing memory-hogging subroutines & deep recursion.
Ever do that? Deep Recursion? It HURTS. Very painful. You learn very quickly, from the first time.
You see that one sad vote saying that they are bad.
Yup thats me, why you might ask...
Because the longer those other servers are up the less bandwidth I have
But hey that my own lil selfish delusion, so please just ignore :)
