I had the same problem a couple of years ago, for the same reason; corporate spent megabucks upgrading, forcing VBA on us all. Pity.
For consolation I had the same idea, and wrote an editor using Perl/Tk, which I called Ticklepad (after Tcl) with about the same functionality as Wordpad. Finally ported it to the Linux box.
Now, back to lurking . . . .
