The Translation Scribe Order

Fellow monks

At this node, I started to discuss about why there is no translation groups walking arround the Monastery, translating the most popular and interesting articles, meditations and tutorials to other languages, so more and more monks could write and rewrite knowledge, like in a big anscient medieval library.

This meditation is in fact a suggestion for the gods to create a new user group at this Monastery, to handle and coordinate article translations to and from english and other languages. This would be a great impulse to internationalize even more this web site, and we will meet a lot of different people, and make many other friends. With luck, we could even learn some more perl...

The translations could be organized in a way so that popular translations get upvoted and the impopular ones get downvoted and removed (as happens with all the rest of this website). Maybe the gods or another existing user group could stablish a list of articles to translate, preventing the newly created translation user group from translating everything (which makes no sense at all).

The new user group could be named The Translation Scribe Order, and accept only fellows from Scribe or higher levels.

This also will help more and more people who wants to learn and share his/her perl knowledge and can't write in english.

Well, that's it. Please throw in your comments.

And may the gods bless you

Why is a new group necessary right now? Those translations that exist exist because someone individually took the time to make them. If you'd like to translate a document, go right ahead! If you need help, one of the gods or editors will be happy to assist you in getting it in place.

It seems that everything you need already exists. If you need something more in the future, we can add it as you go.

      Dear chromatic

The group idea is just a way to make the process more sinergetic. Please remember the Perl Motto, "There Is More Than One Way To Do It"(TM).

That sinergy makes the translation effort a visible thing across the whole site. Visibility brings into the process a couple of factors:

My concern is that there has been very little translation done to date. I'm not sure I can justify spending development time on creating infrastructure for resources that 1) may not be used and 2) aren't solving critical problems.

I'm not opposed to the idea of having a translators group. I just don't get the sense that there are dozens of people who'd go wild translating tutorials if there were only a group for them. Tell me what you absolutely *cannot* do without a group and we'll see if there are ways around it.

Exactly what do you want this group to be able to /do/? AFAICS, all you really want is a group node and a wiki, and from there you'd submit editor requests to annotate the source material with "there's a Fooian translation of this at [id://NNNN]." Translations can just be posted as a new node in the approprate section.

I wouldn't think a group is needed, although I'm not opposed to the view if their are more users. However, I do think the tutorials done in other languages will need to be organized a little better if there are more, three in non-english is fine, but 10 maybe not. Basically I think if we get enough they should be split by language or topic if they are only one or two languages.
