I would sum it up differently. I would quote from perlipc and say:
...be strict in what you provide...but be lenient in what you require...
(OK, they were talking about line terminators. But...)

I also firmly believe that the sooner people can put things behind them, the better.

(BTW I know the charm of allowing /msh to live, but the occasional disaster also happens. Can we kill it again?)
