And of course, if you really did need symbolic refs, one of the great things about strict (and warnings too) is that you can disable it locally:

use strict;
# symbolic refs are disallowed here
{
    no strict 'refs';
    # use symbolic refs as much as you like here
}
# symbolic refs are disallowed here too
