can't help with the last two questions (not sure what you mean with the second), but here's the first one:
my $counter = 0;
while(1)
{
print "Got an even number\n" if(($counter++%2) == 0);
}
This will only print when $counter is even...

Snippets of code should be wrapped in
<code> tags not
<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
