after your code, insert this.

print FILE $myVar;
close(FILE);
open (FILE,"<$filename") or die "I cannot open $filename to read.\n";
my @file_contents=<FILE>;
close(FILE);
print "$myVar should equal ".chomp($file_contents[0])."\n";
