I honestly thought I would see Rastabilly skunk in that list.

But then you would need Reggie Wilson and the sounds of the organ in the list and we would find ourselves in a different area all together.

It's a blatant clue, innit, blatant! Bloomin' heck, if you didn't get that you musta been playin' like puddins!

Why don't you listen to something really classical, like Mozart, Mendelssohn, or Motörhead?

Why don't you listen to something really classical, like Mozart, Mendelssohn, or Motörhead?

Bah. Classical "music" is almost totally devoid of any actual *music* (i.e., counterpoint). Occasionally some Classical composer would study the old greats and take a stab at putting some real counterpoint in (e.g., Mozart did a couple of times), but for the most part, it's all plain lame boring monomelodic humdrum mediocrity. The really *good* music was written before 1750.

I've got a USB key drive that I carry around with my favorite tracks. Looking over the playlist, I've got:

    • A rock remix of the James Bond theme
    • A few Evanescence tracks (American pop)
    • Various styles of electronica (Paul Okenfold, Amanda Ghost, Cynic Project, Moby, Darude, James Grote, Sasha)
    • Two-Mix (Japanese Pop, did the Gundam Wing themes)
    • Tank! (the jazzy opening to Cowboy Beebop)
    • Mohammad Reza Shajarian (a Persian composer who likes to use western instraments)
    • Various classical (Samuel Barber, St. Lubin, John Williams, Pachelbel)

So just what am I supposed to choose here?

"There is no shame in being self-taught, only in not trying to learn in the first place." -- Atrus, Myst: The Book of D'ni.

I'm in the same boat. When you have Ween, Scott Joplin, and Pantera in your music collection, where do you vote? My family has several musicians who play different styles of music, so I grew up loving everything.

I'm voting rock, though, since that's most of what I have. The best CD I've bought in the past year, though? Befriended, by The Innocence Mission. Probably classified somewhere between "alternative" and "folk". My wife found it and I didn't want to buy it at first, but no music has made me as happy as that one CD.

I listen to mostly Japanese pop as well (have several anime sound tracks too including Cowboy Bebop and Gundam Wing)....but I hate American pop so Rock Lobster was out, though the Cowboy Bebop reference (I'm betting accidental) did make me pause for a moment. Instead, I choose Country|Folk, cause I love the old greats like Johnny Cash and Charlie Daniels Band :).

Yes but you can only choose one option in a poll. Which is why the "There's Spam and eggs and spam, Spam spam eggs and spam, spam and eggs..." type thing makes it even better :-)

True, but there wasn't "Spam, spam, eggs, spam, eggs, and corned beef".

"Spam, eggs, spam, spam, eggs, and corned beef" wasn't close enough.

        :)

        yours,

I'm not sure, but I think you can vote as many times as you want to... O:-)

Update: No, you can't. There's an IP-based validation.

I compiled a list of music I had listened to in the last month or so on my comp. Aside from shoutcast here is what I found.

    Electonic/Acid Jazz:
Radiohead, Portishead, Sasha and Digweed, Parks and Wilson, Underworld, Boards of Canada, Massive Attack, Amon Tobin, Bjork, Mogwai, Hooverphonic, Mono, Lamb, Future sound of London, The Orb, Orbital, Unkle.

    Alternative/Metal:
Jeff Buckley, Devine Comedy, Tool, Perfect Circle, Failure, Queens of the Stone age, The Black Heart Procession, Remmy Zero, Red Red meat, Chris Cornell, At the Drive In, Supergrass, On, Low, My Morning Jacket, Cake.

    Country:

Patsy Cline, Jonny Cash, old Tom Waits, Willie Nelson.

    Rap/Hip Hop:

Outkast, Nem, Run DMC, Snoop, Luda.

    Classical:

Beethovens 7th, Brahms Symphony #9, Chopin, Handel, Tchaikovsky, Dvorak.

    Blues/Jazz:

Joe Richardson, Billy Holiday, BB King.

    Older Stuff:

Mammas and the Pappas, Animals, Bill Withers, Ottis Redding, Simon and garfunkel, Kingston Trio, Beatles.

If anybody would like to recomend some group or another in any genre, PM me and I will check them out. I also encourage those with open minds to check out some of the groups I have listed above. Let me know what you think, even if it is negative.

    The hoksila

      I will ++ you for:

Radio Head, Portishead, Massive Attack, Amon Tobin, Bjork, Lamb, Future Sound of London, Tool, Perfect Circle, Outkast, Run DMC (RIP Jay), and basically everything under classical.

      I would recomend:

Tricky, Juno Reactor, Maroon 5, and Vivaldi.

Some of the bands you've listed I've never heard of, and will check out.

A truely compassionate attitude towards other does not change, even if they behave negatively or hurt you

      —His Holiness, The Dalai Lama

Funny. Have you noticed that anybody with similar alternative tastes listens to pretty much everything you do? For instance if somebody tells me they love Radiohead, then I can usually bank on them loving Portishead, Bjork, Perfect Circle etc.

I have all of Tricky's stuff, and have actually been listening to them in my car for a few months. I know Juno Reactor pretty well also. I dont think I have heard Maroon 5, and I also like Vivaldi.

Judging by the bands you like, I think you would really get into black heart procession, and Failure. Failure had several encredibly influential members that later went on to become members of Queens of the stonage, Perfect Circle, On, and literally about 10 others.

I have been listening to and loving Nightmares on wax recently. Do you recommend anybody else?

        Hok_si_la

I think you may wish to fix an ID3 tag or two in there—Brahms only wrote four symphonies. ;-)

        ++ Chemboy. I meant Brahms' 3rd.

Don't agree with many of your classifications, but recognizing many of the groups I'd suggest http://3wk.com.

As far as groups: Sigur Ros (Icelandic, but sings in a made-up language), Gus Gus, Chemical Brothers and Futurama; Land of the El Caminos, Soul Coughing, dEUS (Belgian), The Rentals (second group of Matt Sharp, lead singer of Weezer), Modest Mouse (especially older stuff) and Ugly Casanovas (supergroup with MM lead singer), 764-HERO. And for the harder stuff of course Primus, Faith No More, Ozzy, Clawfinger (Swedish Rap-metal) and Therapy?. Oh yeah, also Ben Lee and maybe Looper.

      --
I'm not belgian but I play one on TV. On dit que je parle comme un belge aussi.

        belg4mit,

The classifications were extrememly generic at best and were intended for those with limited knowledge about the mentioned bands, and of music altogether. I could have literally classified those 50 or so groups into about 25 categories.

Sigur Ross is great! I really should have had them in my recommended list. My wife has the Sigur Ross alien tatoo'd ......somewhere. I also love Gus Gus, and old Chem Brothers (dirt). Soul Coughing is another band I know a bunch about. I listen to them a few times a year. Modest Mouse is great. The drummer for Primus lived in my small college town for a while. I literally grew up listening to their stuff. Favorite from them was the song Southbound Packaderm. Woodpeckers from Mars was my little group of friends' theme song in high school. Ozzy is well, Ozzy.

I have not heard anything from the following bands:
      • Land of the El Caminos (though I live there)
      • dEUS
      • The Rentals
      • Ugly Casonovas
      • 764-Hero
      • Clawfinger
      • Ben Lee
      • Looper

      • I look forward to checking all of them out though along with the site you included. Thanks for the input.

        Hok_si_la
The Clawfinger self titled album Clawfinger (album link) is OK, but after about half of the album, it gets repetative. I can only stand it for about 3 songs before I toss it back into the collection not to be brought out for another month or so.

Where's 'prog rock'? I listen to progressive rock groups from the 70's. Examples are Genesis, Yes, ELP, Pink Floyd, Rush, and many others. Right now I'm listening to Songs from the Wood by Jethro Tull.
There are infinite ways to slice a cat, but we are only allowed finite options in a poll. Personally I'd lump your tastes in with Rock Lobster (Pop), though it also borders on Rock and Roll all Night (Rock).

I usually listen to baroque
by jonadab (Parson) on Mar 16, 2005 at 17:20 UTC

Baroque, especially fugue. Music without counterpoint is like food without flavor. 1750 is the year music died.

It really depends on what I'm doing. If I'm driving, then definitely punk because in California, driving is not a right, it's a war game during the daily commute. :) However if I'm coding, I prefer classical or opera since it tends to mellow me out.

Now if the poll was what was on my MP3 player, it would be everything from classical to jass to R&B to blues to punk/new wave/ska and just about everything inbetween except disco.

That's the first thing that popped into my mind when I read the list too.

I usually listen to Christian rock and pop. I like Relient K, tobymac, Third Day, Tree63, MercyMe, Building 429, and Avalon to name but a few.

    In no particular order:
    Robert Johnson
    Jelly Roll Morton
    Leadbelly
    Bucka White
    B.B. King
    SRV
    Jimi Hendrix
    Muddy Waters
    Howlin Wolf
    Albert King

    Just to mention a few!

    Sweetblood

I've notice a pretty odd thing about fellow blues fans. They tend to fall into three categories:

      1) Older blacks, usually from the south,
      2) Blue collar white guys, again often from the south or with southern ties,
      3) Educated northern caucasian intellectuals.

And I say this as someone who sorta falls into category 3) but comes from a background of 2) and has worked with a lot of people in category 1). It's also interesting to see how these different groups react to different acts at blues festivals. Buddy Guy (at least in his latest incarnation) does little for group #1, but #2 loves him and #3 seems to like him well enough.

What all this means, I have no idea, but it's something I've often noticed.

That's an interesting analisys. I suppose I fall into group three to some extent, although I not too sure about the intellectual tag. I came to the blues through 60s psychedelica, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton, etc. As a guitar player, I suppose it was a natural progression.

I know the usual poll caveats apply, but this seems a glaring omission given the rest of the options:

The Rocky Horror Picture Show soundtrack (glam/musical?).

A quick glance at my fave playlist brings up (unordered, uncategorised):

    Godspeed You Black Emporer
    Do Make Say Think
    Modest Mouse
    Neutral Milk Hotel
    The Dresden Dolls
    The Cat Empire
    Ween
    Psychic TV
    Captain Beefheart
    Innocence Mission
    King Crimson
    Barry Adamson
    Richard Cheese
    The White Stripes
    Recoil
I have to say that a day doesn't go by that I'm not listening to A Silver Mt. Zion or GYBE. Good choise on them.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show => Meatloaf => Rock and Roll All Night (Rock) :).

      Does this sound correct :)?
Re: I usually listen to...

I also had to downvote this poll for the lack of multiple choice. I love Rachmaninov, still he got so little votes because I could only vote for electronic music which I definitely listen most often. Like (hopefully many) others here I have a very eclectic music collection at home and in my heart that includes The Clash, Dvorak, Shy FX, Dreadzone, Lee Perry, Johnny Cash, Breeders, The Orb, KRS One, Missy Elliott, Jimi Hendrix, Metallica, just to name a few ...

I noticed that my music preferences change from time to time, like three years ago I would have chosen Rap, and if perlmonks would have already existed ten years ago, I would have voted for Alternative Rock or Reggae.

I also noticed that in some online forums about skating, adolescent kids insult each other for listening to the wrong kind of music, while both sides seem to know only two kinds of them - Rock and Hiphop.

As has been previouly mentioned many many times (and earlier in the discussion of this poll), no poll allows multiple choices.

Do you recognize any of these?

When people ask "what kind of music do you like?" ... the standard answer is "any kind that inspires me to listen to it again instead of ignoring it"

The next "killer app" will be the one that allows a person to find new music that he or she would never have even thought of looking for, but will enjoy ... such an application would ignore GENRE and simply focus on THE INEFFABLE ESSENCE OF PERSONAL PREFERENCE.

If you recognize any of these, you might want to check one or more of the others ... or not.

Have a look at audioscrobbler. thereTheir service links the music you're listening to to other peoples tastes and recommends music to you, regardless of the (perceived) genre.

There are plugins for a lot of player-software, amarok has audioscrobbler build-in, others will follow I think - it's fun to get suggestions for new music that actually fits.

It's called iRate Radio. I tried it briefly, but I discovered that I was mostly discovering a lot of music I didn't like. I guess I'm picky. The idea is sound, IMO, but the implemenation leaves something to be desired. Everything is lossily compressed, which is no good for regular listening. Additionally, it doesn't play higher-rated tracks more often; it just has a cutoff at a certain point (five out of ten, I think), where anything rated lower than that isn't played at all -- but a seven is played just as often as a ten, and so you can't rate tracks you only sort-of like at six, because they play constantly and drive you mad. This forces you to rate everything you don't want to hear very often at five or lower. But the idea of ignoring genre and choosing tracks for you based on finding people who rated other tracks similarly to the way you rated them is an interesting idea, in principle, and could potentially be really useful.

I wrote a Perl::Tk app called AlterniRATE to get around their inane playlist algorithm. It doesn't download files-- you need to run the official app every so often for that-- but it plays tracks based on the rating and how long it's been since it was last played.

I wrote it to illustrate a better algo for the developers, and i wasn't much of a java programmer at the time. The head dude was so enamored of his playlist algorithm that not only was i ignored, but i also became sort of a persona non grata on their lists. Whatever.

I haven't run iRATE in ages; their debian package has been broken forever and i got tired of reporting bugs.

I voted for Rock Island since I mostly listen to jazz and blues. (My nom de perlmonks comes from my being such a bit T-Bone Walker fan, FWIW.) However, since purchasing my iPod, my tastes have expanded somewhat, particularly since the iTunes music store started offering free weekly downloads. It's gotten to the point where I might listen to classical or even, gasp, certain country/folk that doesn't try to be pop or rock.

It's funny, though, I always seem to come back to blues no matter where my tastes wander for a while.

I've been trying to figure out *what* exactly is the type of music I listen to and have come to the conclusion that it has nothing to do with genre - more to do with the band's educational background: If they went to an art school - and bonus points if they dropped out - they're highly rated in my iTunes playlist. For example: Talking Heads, Blonde Redhead, The Swayback, Les George Leningrad, Mr. Pacman! Take that as you will.

Heh heh... all the stuff I put in my iTunes ends up defaulting to 'Classical'. What sort of Genre is that?! Of course it's classical. What I need to know is "is it Chamber, Opera, Concerto, Lieder, Keyboard, Sonata, Symphonic or what?".

Hagen - who hasn't listened to anyone who didn't die before he was born; except for Rachmaninov - oh, and John Adams, Philip Glass, John Cage, Alan Hovhaness and maybe some others.

Random thoughts: I recently discovered Ska. Mirror in the Bathroom rocks big style! While I see the connection between ska and punk, they do sound very different. But I do like just about everything that's 'good' and like to analyse any music I hear. I may not particularly like Eminem's persona, but he is inventive and very good at what he does. I also recently came round to the idea of drum and bass, having initially hated it. Some electronic 'dance' music I hear on late night radio 1 can be infuriating, because there's a great beat, but it's looped for ages with no breakbeat. On the other hand, Monaco's fantastic 'What Do You Want From Me' has to have the most abrupt transitions ever! New Order aren't quite up to God-like genius level, but they are one of the most influential bands ever. The Killers rock, partly because of the New Order influence, but also because of the Jean-Michel Jarre influence.

In the most general terms though, my musical preference is Big beat/breaks, whether the beats and breaks are electronically synthesised or guitar-led or piano led or whatever.

How can you feel when you're made of steel? I am made of steel. I am the Robot Tourist.

    What? No Rockabilly Skank??? :-)

      What? No Rockabilly Skank??? :-)

Hey, that's the question I wanted to add. Honestly.

I dance, and dance music is all I listen to.
Lot's of swinging and jiving and-a boogey-woogey and rocking and-a-beat.

      A-shave-and-a-hair-cut please, Sören

I voted for folk|country but like many others I could have voted for several different styles. It's actually easier to disqualify those that, well, don't qualify for me.
    • Dance|Techno
    • Rap|Hip Hop
    • Punk|Ska
    • Raggae
Other than that I can listen to virtually anything and my favorites change from time to time. At the moment, it's Kenny Rogers whom I listen most often to but my musical preferences range from Metallica/Blind Guardian/Hammerfall to Bach/Händel/Lehar and Weird Al Yankovic.

"Until the philosophy which holds one race
    Superior and another inferior
Is finally and permanently discredited and abandoned
Everywhere is war, me say war

That until there is no longer first class
And second class citizens of any nation
Until the colour of a man's skin
Is of no more significance than the colour of his eyes
    Me say war

That until the basic human rights are equally
Guaranteed to all, without regard to race
    Dis a war

    That until that day
The dream of lasting peace, world citizenship
    Rule of international morality
Will remain in but a fleeting illusion
To be pursued, but never attained
    Now everywhere is war, war

And until the ignoble and unhappy regimes
That hold our brothers in Angola, in Mozambique,
    South Africa sub-human bondage
    Have been toppled, utterly destroyed
Well, everywhere is war, me say war

War in the east, war in the west
War up north, war down south
    War, war, rumours of war

And until that day, the African continent
Will not know peace, we Africans will fight
We find it necessary and we know we shall win
As we are confident in the victory

Of good over evil, good over evil, good over evil
Good over evil, good over evil, good over evil"

    War, Bob Marley

What about Classical rock like ELO and Trans Siberian Orchestra? I also tend to listen to unique cultonatmusic and opera as well.

For about the last year, I've listened to almost nothing but whatever Steve Jones plays on the radio, but for various reasons (like I've had Gram Parsons in my CD player for the last year, and the Watusi Rodeo show is on the same station as Steve Jones), I voted for Rocky Mountain High.

Well... I grew up in a house where Classical Rock, Country, Jazz and Blues (Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Don McLean, Louis Armstrong, Leonard Cohen, etc.) were dominating, but as I grew up I somehow found my way into Punk, and I've been a Punker ever since :) ...
