Hi all, I'm relatively new here. (I'm also relatively new to Perl, but not entirely.)
Anyways, I noticed there are these incredibly Perlized people here who memorized (mostly through experience I presume) most of Perl's functions and are able to apply them in the most bizarre and usefull manners.
The experience system is nice and keeps trolls from cluttering things too much, so I am completely satisfied with it.
However, there are these saints with more than twice the amount of experience required for that level, and far more people with lower XP.
So to distinguish ordinary saints from the people mentioned above, (although I'm an ant in this picture -THIS picture)
I think it would be a good thing to add another level with an extremely high amount of required XP.
Vroom?

MF,
I'm not certain this is entirely necessary. As I understand the level system, it provides a darkly reflected idea of the community's idea of your contributions. I don't believe it's meant to reflect your skill in Perl itself. Again, it's a sketch of your contributions to the community.
While the specific threads escape me, I've seen many of the higher level monks post messages that say, in effect, there are many areas of Perl and its use that they wished they knew better. Take a look at Best Nodes and Most Visited Nodes. You'll see that some of the most popular nodes deal with the process or the philosophy of Perl, rather than the mechanics.
Besides, there aren't that many PM users with that high of XP. Check out the bell curve on the Monk Stats. According to the Overall Stats, there are nine saints, five pontiffs, and thirteen bishops, or slightly over 1/2 of one percent of all users. This hardly seems a significant number of users to be concerned about. They know who among them has the highest Perl skills.
While I personally would love to be able to claim Demigod as a professional job title, I personally believe the existing XP levels are more than adequate for this particular community.

Yes, I realize that..That's why I posted a followup. I couldn't seem to edit the post.

This makes sense to me, although I don't know if I would choose "demigod". I don't think that it is super important, but it would be a fun thing to do. Maybe the names of the new levels should be picked via a poll at the Gates. You can still see who is ranked the highest (no matter what name they have attached to them in the PM Stats Page.

merlyn, I believe, suggested the order of angels...
Seraphim, Cherubim, Thrones,
Dominations, Virtues, Powers,
Principalities, Archangels and Angels.
Seraphim would be the highest. (Others argue that
the wrod angel refers to the whole list and that
"The Archangel" is Michael and is the greatest of
the Seraphim.
Sure am I glad I spent my hard-earned money on that
comparative religions course. =)
Update: this is a heck of a list I just found:
Angels
I'm glad _I_ don't have that much time...

Personally, I wouldn't want levels to be named directly after "Angels". To me, for some reason, this place has a mix of Buddhist and Christian overtones by various level names, and sections of the Monestary. I hope this was an intent, and I am not the only one who sees it :) But, if you start higher levels by being names of "Angels", you really make it a Perl Monestary whose highest members are Christian Angels. I would rather have added level names not be religion specific. I'm just funny about that kind of thing :)
Actually, this brings up another idea. Maybe we could choose our level path. Level systems (all sharing the same XP systems) could be made for other religions, or themes (Buddhist, Catholic, ..insert religion here.., Medieval, D&D, whatever).
Cheers,
KM

Just realized this looks rather dumb.
I'm not trying to say XP is directly related to the knowledge of Perl or your value as a human or anything similar.. :) | [reply] |

Though I'm rather new here as well, but have been lurking since I created my account, I think that it may be a good idea for another level, but I agree that it shouldn't be restricted of representative of any certain religious influence. I like the idea of Orders so something in reference to Holy Orders of Knights (the most popular and recognized are Christian based, but several Eastern Religions have had religious protective Orders; pre-Christian Europian clans also had them, though smaller in number and localized).
I'm not quite sure how it would fit in at the top of blessed, but that an idea I had while reading this node. Another was something like "Anointed" or "Blessed" though that pretty much already fits the Saint category. | [reply] |
