I stumbled across a comprehensive collection of O'Reilly CD books on a web site today, and I fired off a quick email to infringement@oreilly.com. The way I see it, I benefit from those books, as do the writers, many of whom are also Monks, and it bothers me to see that benefit siphoned off by freeloaders.

I received an email in reply in about two hours, which I will share:

Thanks for taking the time to report suspected copyright infringement to us. We will investigate and take appropriate measures to prevent further misuse of our materials. We (and our authors) are truly grateful for the support of readers like you and we look forward to continuing to provide you with top-quality technology publications.

So, whatever your take on the issue, I think that O'Reilly is both aware of and responsive to the issue.

Replies are listed 'Best First'.

Oh, I don't disagree with that. I also benefit from music, and it bothers me that musicians are siphoned off by freeloaders.

That still doesn't mean I'm informing the RIAA whenever I know of people "sharing" music.

A good point, but O'Reilly is not the RIAA. Regardless of your opinion of their moral stance, the RIAA have consistently acted like stupendous dorks (this is a Bowdlerization of my real feelings). O'Reilly has made efforts to be fair and balanced. For me the issue is impact - Britney needs my money like a hole in the head, so I wouldn't worry about it, but if I find a site distributing the content of a struggling local artist I might take steps.

Yeah? But what about the people printing the CD covers of Britney? A drop in sells of Britney CDs gets them as well. Who knows, they may be the same people printing the covers of O'Reilly books.
