Perl is helping me change careers. Because it is so easy for me to rapidly develop worthwhile applications in Perl, I was able to basically crank out something my boss wanted in my spare time, and thereby show him that I have programming skill, as well as desire. Programming professionally is so hard to do these days without experience, or at least a degree....
