with regard to perlmonks site changes: one of the reasons i love perlmonks is because it's dependably the same. it's sweet that way. i know where things are and i know how to make them work. if changes were being considered, and i were to get a vote, i would vote for making things better without making them different.

For the most part, that's what goes on. I know that when demerphq (or other pmdev) work on things like XML tickers, they usually add functionality that can be accessed via URL options, rather than changing existing functionality. ...usually.

And the basic layout of the site hasn't changed much either. Sure, you can do a lot more with CSS now than a year or so ago here, but it's not necessary for users to do anything to keep their view of the Monastery just about the same.

I tend to work pretty hard to preserve the illusion of continuity from the users point of view. However its not always possible to do this. Sometimes preserving continuity comes at the cost of performance and system stability. And when that happens I have no regrets about breaking things.

For instance some of our tickers were designed long before we had so many users and so many posts and just in general so much going on. Some of them had no restrictions on the size of the data set they returned, etc. So as the site grew they werent able to scale up. So they have to be changed.

Other non-backwards compatible changes involve things like making the tickers more consistant. Which while it does occasionally involve breakage, I believe that it is in the long term benefit of the site.

Is there a particular change you have a problem with?

    C.

One change I found fairly poor was the Node Title "default". For some reason I can't seem to find where to turn off the "^\n" part (eg in "Re^3: $title").

But I believe this has been discussed many times before ;-)

Change is part of life; don’t fear it.

That said, there have been heaps of improvements to details, but no real changes since I joined the fray over four years ago (save one which happened very recently). None of the even remotely big changes that I remember has been frivolous (only the aforementioned recent one might be debatable).

So by and large, I don’t see why you’d be uneasy enough to make such a request.

    Makeshifts last the longest.

Fondness for stability is not fear

But it becomes fear when it encompasses sensible and necessary change. Which is why I went on to point out that big changes have not been frivolous and most changes have been limited in scope.

        Makeshifts last the longest.

i just like perlmonks and one of the reasons is because you don't log on and it's totally different one day. it's consistent and i can depend on it like a good old friend. i appreciate that. i just wanted to voice my opinion. and yes, change is good, but so is dependability, and not having to relearn how to use your trusty tools. there haven't been any changes yet that bother me - that's my whole point. perlmonks has stayed pretty much the same and i feel like i'm home when i'm here.
