    Taste.
No kidding! This Sunday we took the kids to a local farm and chose pumpkins, then my wife and I made fresh pumpkin cheesecake.

Maybe I'm spoiled by living in the Midwest, but fresh pumpkin pastries and pies are absolutely fantastic.

Unfortunately, growers are breeding pumpkins these days for carving and size, not taste.

Fortunately, there's been a backlash (see Tuesday's NYT article which requires a login).

So yeah, go taste! I speak as someone who makes an excellent pumpkin pie and pumpkin soup (I chose "Functionality" for my vote).

Size. There's just nothing better than having a bigger pumpkin than your neighbor, especially if it is that neighbor with the boat, the pool, and the fancy sports car. :)

Yup, although that is more to have enough room to put the fancy design on it.

Personally, I have yet to find a pumpkin with any kind of efficiency. You carve them, and in a few days you have rotting pumpkin soup on your porch. :p

Considers all patchs carefully, evaluating them on different platforms and verifies threads-compatibility and ensures that code written for 5.001m still runs correctly. Definite bonus points if they also enjoy a beer or two. When confronted with a bug, will quickly develop a fix, add documentation and tests.

    Oh, you said pumpkin.

"Size" is a pretty attractive (non-)option, but I'm going to have to go with "personality".

    ---
It's all fine and dandy until someone has to look at the code.

It's not the size, it's what you do with it that matters!

My eye/brain interface is playing tricks again. I read the title of this poll as...

What I look for in a pumpking is...

This made me wonder if something had happened to Nicholas, or if we had achieved a perl release milestone and I didn't notice.

Thick skin.... so when the little twerps kick it after taking the treats they have been given, the pumpkin grabs their foot. Watch a little goblin try to run down the street with a pumpkin of any size stuck to his foot... good for a weeks worth of laughter...

Hmmm, Fresh Roasted Pumpkin Seeds... ;)

For anyone out there that anticipates smashed pumpkins:

Dog Crap, Lots of it. Mix in some old kitty litter. I think my house must have become famous, nobody smashes my Jack-O-Lanterns anymore.

Yes it makes a mighty mess and smells bad, but you ROFLYAO while you spray off the foot prints on your driveway.

    ;)

    --Brig
I was getting fed up with all this about pumpkins, but you made me laugh out loud ++.

When I was a young lad many moons ago in the UK we didn't know what a pumpkin was and had to make do with a hollowed out turnip or swede. Not an easy thing to hollow out compared to a pumpkin.
Many hours later with cuts on our hands the resplendent blood splattered hollowed out turnips would be put on view illuminated by a bit of candle (no batteries or flashing diodes for us).

The kids have it too easy these days!!
      Gavin
had to make do with a hollowed out turnip or swede

Hollowed out Swedes? Don't they scream an awful lot? For lack of a Swede, can you substitute a Fin?

        Well it is halloween.

A turnip? That sounds like a true challenge, I've made Jacks out of various gourds, but never a turnip

I'm glad I made you laugh. After having a number of Jack-O-Lanterns smashed over the years I decided to get even. I decided that filling it with broken bottles was over the top, but remembered the old "poop in a burning bag" prank.

I had two more Jacks smashed after that (2002) and not a one since.

        :)

Is that because no one is willing to walk downwind of your house anymore?

I had no idea the monastery was full of so many pumkin experts or that there was so much to look for in a pumpkin.
Living in a country where we don't do anything for halloween, we normally just look for seeds....

Take a look at this if size is your thing:
