I'm having difficulties with the second of these parts.

Ok, the second part is the string

"$opt{ dir }/$_"

This is all very basic and simple. I see no way but to explain it to you with an example. If the %opt hash has a 'dir' key with an associated 'foo' value and $_ contains 'bar', then the above string will evaluate to 'foo/bar'.
