Go to Signature Settings and put those blank lines in your "node template" (and then you won't even get the "node text goes above" notice either).

Howdy!
Hmmm...All I had to do was click on the blank line sandwiched between
p tags and start typing. As tye noted, just fix up your signature
to make it look the way you *want* it to look. I don't have to type
'Howdy!' either. It's all there.

Yeah, although I wouldn't mind the addition of this feature, the simplest solution might be to add a couple lines of javascript to your free nodelet.

For each post, I have to click on
Node text goes above. Div tags should contain sig only
How so? I don't! Well, maybe because I don't have a sig. (Some time later...) Ok, I've tried and I understand what you mean. Since the sig insertion is automatic, it should not be put at all in the text composition window: doing so screams for on the fly modifications, or removal altogether. But why? Anyway, I do not have your problem either, since I have some text in my node template, that comes out before the sig. (Removing the sig again...)

Simple reason to do sigs as they are...you don't have to just put a sig in your node template, you can put other tags you like to use. The other is simplicity, this is done and works, and if it ain't broke, nobody is going to volunteer to fix it ;)
Even if they do, their are other complications. Like do you keep all sigs in a seperate field per node? or just automaticaly append a users sig when you view their node (but then historic signatures disappear when you change yours. Well I could ramble on and on, but the point is it works and has some nice features that would be harder to accomplish other ways so I say leave it! ;)

Do not misunderstand me: I thoroughly second that. It's also not a problem for me because I do not have a sig here and I don't want to, although I have several ones for email. Anyway I agree that the sig must become part of the message, unlike in those fora in which it changes everytime in all of what you ever wrote, when you modify it: it's true that one should not comment sigs, but if she does, then her message may risk of losing sense if that mechanism was in place. Yet I'd conceptually prefer it not to appear at all in the composition window, but only to be appended after submitting. It's just me, probably, and as I wrote I don't really mind...

and then hit return a few times before starting to type.
LOL! Do you have to hit the return key with a sledge hammer? That's tiresome, for sure, but it can be seen as a physical invigorating excercise, can't it?

The committee has met and it looks promising that we'll be able to allocate funds to have a pony sent to him to press the return key for him and we are confident that this will satisfactorily resolve the situation.

Node text goes above. Div tags should contain sig only
I totally don't understand what OP means, or I must seriously be missed something. I never see that notice text around each time I post or reply a node, with or without sigs and template. I do have template for quoting text from nodes I reply to. If there's a text I need to quote, I copy and paste it in the template:
<blockquote><i></i></blockquote>
then move on, press Enter, and start typing. If I don't quote I just remove the template although no effect would incur if I kept it. Other than that, I can't see any problem. Any monk can shed a light why and in what context does he experience what is appearantly a problem?
OTOH, I do think that separating text and sigs might be a nice to have, but it remains unnecessary, and would add no extra values for user experience. It's been like this for any webmails I use, so what's for?

The notice is added if one has a non-blank signature but a blank node template.
- tye (not all sigs are created equal1)
1 Nor do they always have the last word, just FYI. (:
