How do you regularly express "regular expressions"? Communication is weird. Communication, when one party has no idea what the other means, is weirder. Everyone (well, maybe not everyone) I meet has a different way of saying the phrase 'regular expressions'. How do you? Regular expressions Regex Regexes Regexp Regexps Regexen Patterns Rules Line noise The wrong way Other (for the sake of completeness) I pronounce them 'regex' with a soft g (as in "Lawliet is a prodigy"). I didn't include the letter pronunciation because it would take up too much room (~15 options) and I think I meant this to be communicating online, not in real life. Although, maybe another poll could be how you say them aloud ;D And you didn't even know bears could type.	[reply]

Another important question is what do you want done with your body after your dead? I've always wanted mine to be actually blown-up in a hollywood movie. One that's not a bomb (sorry), has a good plot, and lots of action. Obviously, a James Bond movie would be the ultimate! Maybe more interesting than reading 'regex' itself is how to you read an actual regex? This would be close to a repeat of I live in this Continent. Given that the site is now ten years old, the pollsters may decide that we should start to repeat old polls, but then at least repeat the really interesting ones please. Monks can vote on old polls (I went through all of them once), there's an official link to this from polls, and you don't even need votes or level for this. Thus, IMO we should not repeat a poll just because there are lots of new monks that weren't here when it was originally on, but only if there's a reason to believe that the opinions of many monks that have voted on the old poll have changed since. In theory, there could also be an option of making an existing old poll to appear in the voting booth nodelet again, as a way to direct attention to it. Update. I'm just on PerlMonks for the free beer Because Larry's my dad, and he told me I had to Perl is just chicken scratch anyway, so when I write all of my code using regex's, people actually think I know what I'm doing Because Perl makes easy things easy, and hard things possible I was told that if I use Perl, I'm allowed to be lazy, and lazy works for me I really like the writing style of many of its books authors ...what else is there? easy to use, easy to understand it has one of the best online communities anywhere Steve	[reply]

My co-workers refuse to learn or use Perl because ... Some people like to type the same sequence of keys until they have Carpal Tunnel. That Java code almost writes itself! The IDE does all that work anyway. No time to pick up a new skill, even if it saves time. Can't read regular expressions. Don't believe in all that "natural language" stuff. On the list of things to do someday. Don't write scripts, just create macros. jbt	[reply]
