Universal Navigation Bar for Perl Sites

There is a debate going on on the subject of marketing Perl - one of the recent ideas is a a big Explore Perl button that would help people navigate between Perl sites, including PerlMonks of course. I think that making various Perl sites more collaborative and less self-concentrated is a great initiative. So the question is do you think there is a place for it in the PM page structure?

Update: Rephrased per jdporter request.

I have a few problems with the proposal as stated in that blog. (I'd post there directly, but I'm not going to create a login just for this.) First, as a programmer, I don't like the O(n^2) nature of the solution — that is, all n sites having links to all other n-1 sites. And although it sounds nice in theory, keeping the menu unified by having a common file which all of the sites suck in isn't realistic, as each site has its own infrastructure and layout. In particular I'm thinking of sites like PerlMonks which are rather "reluctant" in their javascript support.

A workable solution to the above would be to have a "dumb" version which is simply a link to the menu, javascript and all (when allowed by the client), hosted on a single central site — maybe We could easily add such a link/button on PerlMonks. To be honest, I don't understand why the "mega-nav" menu is so great. To me it's just gratuitous use of the technology. Opening the menu on another page works about as well and at a much lower technology cost.

Between the mind which plans and the hands which build, there must be a mediator... and this mediator must be the heart.

Well, we need a new design before adding a button to it :) I think there is a TPF Grant for it right? Another thing comes to mind is the status of "" it's destined to die in the hands of O'Reilly as it seems...

it contains a direct feature request for PerlMonks

It does? I don't see one. Could you please be less telepathic about it? My psychic abilities aren't too sharp.

It is about adding a new navigation bar to all main Perl web sites including PerlMonks.
Don't they call that a webring?

I'd be happy to add an "explore button" to CPANdeps, if someone else tells me how, and promises to maintain it. I'd also welcome any help that anyone can give me with the design.

CPANdeps, like most other things in the perl community, was originally written because I had an itch that needed scratching. I stopped when it worked, but since then have added features and made some minor tweaks when people suggested them. If someone who knows how to write HTML has any suggestions (preferably in the form of a patch that I can apply to the publicly available templates) then I'd be delighted to apply it. The only constraints I'll impose on any contributed design are that functionality, compactness, and ease of use are more important than prettiness.

    Vote no to compulsory conformity.
      Well, if I have to...

How about a Perl Top 100 list, like in the old days of "Warez" websites :D

Of course, we'd need at least 100 websites about Perl...
