FYI, Perl already has all the necessary scaffolding in place to do this as a command-line one-liner:

 perl -ibak -pe 's/cps\*\*\*/nat***/g' filename

Indeed. I usually use something like

find . -name \*.txt -print0 | xargs -0 perl -pi -w -e 's/find/replace/
+g'

which I got from One-line shell script for find and replace.
