I would break it apart, but I hate the thought of polluting perlmonks with multiple posts. Do you think just cutting the code sections out to another post would be ok?

    I don't think it would be "pollution".

    Personally, I'd break out the code sections and related narrative and post them as replies to the root and add links in the root to them.

    An (IMO: poorer) alternative, would be to wrap chunks of the post in <readmore></readmore> tags.
