Q: Do I need permission to ask a question in the Chatterbox?

A: No, you do not need permission to ask a question in the Chatterbox, so just go ahead and ask. Also, do not worry about interrupting a conversation in progress. There are people here who can concentrate on more than one conversation at once.

Q: I asked a question and no one answered me, why not?

A: The Chatterbox is not always manned. There are times when the Chatterbox is quite dead. While waiting for your answer in the Chatterbox, you could do a search of PerlMonks for your answer through the search box on the top of each page, go to Super Search to do a more specific search for your answer, or just go to Google and check there. If your Google search has the word "perl" anywhere in it, it is a good bet that there will be more than a few search results that will lead you back here.

Q: How do I get a specific or better answer to a question in the Chatterbox?

A: You need to be as specific as possible with what the problem is. Also, having sample code will help tremendously. If you are asking a question in the Chatterbox, you have already created an account which means you have a scratchpad where you can post code. There is a link to your scratchpad on your home node (also known as a profile). When you put your code there, surround it with <code> tags. Like with posting to any of the sections here, reading Writeup Formatting Tips will help you with the formatting on your scratchpad. If you can't find your scratchpad, you can search for it in the Search box above by typing "<your user name>'s scratchpad". When your code is on your scratchpad, you can type [pad://] in the Chatterbox with your question.

Just a few random thoughts of mine brought together for your amusement. They might do some good for the new users who happen to read the FAQs.

Have a cookie (or carrot if you're on a diet) and a very nice day!

    Lady_Aleena,
Q: Do I need permission to ask a question in the Chatterbox?

    A. Don't ask to ask, just ask - or risk being axed.

I saw this once on #perl freenode IRC and couldn't resist stealing it.

Q: I asked a question and no one answered me, why not?

Sometimes there's a lot of activity going on in the Chatterbox. Several monks may be in the middle of answering another's question. Honestly, sometimes there's just some good fun being had (Like debates on whether or not the Rolling Stones are great musicians.) In either case you may want to wait until a question has been resolved or the conversation cools down a bit.

In the meantime you may either learn something new from another monk's question or be entertained for sure.
