There's a good reason for me to look forward to 2011: I'm going to be a father, and I think that's going to be the single most drastic change in my life so far :-)

I seriously don't know how to feel facing the fact that this year will be my 50th birthday. Too old to do more? Yough enough to do more? Only time will tell ...
At least I still have the looks that make others guess me up to 17 years younger :)
Enjoy, Have FUN! H.Merijn

The great thing about passing fifty is that you can stop taking life so damned seriously. Passing sixty is a bit like that as well, you can still care about things, but only the ones worth caring about. The scary thing is wondering if you will live to see a Perl 6 production release ...

Sorry to say that I really don't care about perl6 at all, as they decided to make my coding style close to illegal in perl6 by default because of whitespace issues.
For me, coding is like art. The code should not only work well, but also look appealing. That will increase the maintainability. Perl5 gave everyone all the flexibility they needed to make their code adapt to their personal style. And all were happy, as all think their style is best. Nothing wrong with that, as long as you are consistent in that style and gave it some thought. I have tried to explain my personal style, which is best for me. I will not try to convince others to change.
Perl6 is not my language.
Enjoy, Have FUN! H.Merijn

I find it interesting that at the present time, the majority answer is 1984. Is the 1984 significance based on the Orwell book? Are respondents looking forward to 2011 to see if time will dispel another author's imagined future? If so, I would expect that would have happened in 2010 - I don't recall a massive space odyssey occurring last year...
Personally, I'm starting a new job in 2011, so chose 'the year I entered college' as akin to such an event. Unfortunately, the new job has absolutely nothing to do with Perl (I almost declined due to that fact, but money talks). Sigh. | [reply] |

Are respondents looking forward to 2011 to see if time will dispel another author's imagined future? Well in that case I'm looking forward to 2015 as according to "Back to the Future" we'll be driving flying cars and playing on hover-boards.

Well, Pete, I picked 1984 because that's when I graduated from High School, not because of the book. That said, any time a dystopian novel is disproven, it's a good thing.
| [reply] |
|
So 2011 naturally would be your 27th High School reunion, which is obviously relevant since it's three cubed!
I'm way off-base here, aren't I? ;)

Most of the initial answers don't make a lot of sense. With the exception of zentara, for whom time runs backwards as often as it runs forwards, it would not be possible to 'look forward' to years who's significance was not predicted ahead of time. For me, the year 2000. I cleaned up as a consultant, holding the hand of various paranoid customers worried about Y2K... fnord | [reply] |

> it would not be possible to 'look forward' to years who's significance was not predicted ahead of time.
Why not? Noone says anything about that 'looking forward' to such a year has anything to do with the significance (that wasn't predicted),..
I looked forward to the year I met my spouse, but the reason that I looked forward to that specific year had nothing to do with her...
| [reply] |

I should have been more specific. I was really only referring to most of the numeric date years. You couldn't 'look forward' to 1492, when the event that is most identified with that year could not have been known ahead of time. Ditto 1776 and 1941. You could make the case for 2001 and 2010, based on AC Clarke's books, though. Few people 'look forward' to the year they stop drinking before they finally make the decision, ditto the divorce option. Just picking nits...fnord

Back to doing what I love next to best - improving my knowledge and use of perl. Thank you for allowing me for the past years to read the wisdom (and the humor) here. What I love best is not a what but a who and I look forward to 2012 to improve upon that first and foremost. Best wishes for a wonderful new year to all! | [reply] |
