in reply to My typing speed

Does anybody else ever realize they can type code almost as fast as just plain text? I hardly look at the keyboard anymore. What I really need is some sort of optical device that knows where the kb would be and knows which key I would have hit. If only for the sake of cleaning off this desk, and having less to spill beer on.

Thought: Did vroom mean "My" typing speed? As in what we think of his speed? :)

What we really need is one of those word games with the falling text, on PM so we can test it, and keep score with each other. Maybe it'll take a random word out of the CB and make you type it as fast as possible. Etc... :)

This interests me - I can type code just about as fast as I can type standard text, but things are very different for my husband. He is (mild-moderately) dyslexic, and so typing plain text probably works out to about 10 wpm after corrections.

Where code is concerned, however, I've never seen him make a mistake. Until I first saw this I never considered that perhaps a different part of the brain processes different languages.

Anybody know whether it's possible to have problems with one (spoken, not programming) language and not another?

I've found that, since I started using Perl, I tend to trip over my tongue when I speak -- my brain is going faster than I can talk. But I never "get ahead of myself" while typing code, which I find odd. Perhaps I can type an idea in code faster than I can speak an idea in words.

Sounds like a dangerous symptom to me. You are now communicating with machines better than human beings :-) At least you always know where you stand with a computer. Still possibly worthy of quiet contemplation over a beer with some friends.

Im near the same level of dyslexia as your husband. The reason he code like a mad man but cant type(words) for crap is because we are able to visually see how the code works in our heads. This visualization is where we excel when compared to normal people. Since Im able to see how the code is being run in my head my hands amazingly reacts with the correct code with out me thinking much on the code but more on the how the code is working. It's pretty cool how the whole process works. And this seems to work jsut as equally when reading code (with a few exceptions depending on how complex the algorithms are). Just dont ask us to fully document what the program does. It can be done to an extent but it requires lots of advil and plenty of naps. (I get very dissoriented when writing and very tired too)
