( [id://3333]=superdoc: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??
Hi! {konnichi wa!} {hola!}

First, I'd like to say sorry for such a long article :-). I recently thought up another idea that is relating partially to design and elegance. Those are two things that I think are really nice to have as well as having either informative or comical content on a home node of a Perl Monk user. There are some really nice and informative home nodes out there, that should be showed to any user whether they be the novice, or the professional Perl Monk user, to educate, inform, or to make one laugh even. Here is a list of reasons, and arguments for and against this idea, as well as introducing the petition that will be made known.

My petition is:
"Would it be a good idea to create a new pursuit for various Perl Monks to follow to create some type of virtual 'Monk Node Wars' (taking off from the uber-popular show 'Junkyard Wars';) where every few days or every week, there would be a contest to see who had the most elegant, informative, funny, etc. home node?"

If this were to happen, it is obvious there would need to be various categories for judging, as well as some type of award or reward. I invite you to follow along with the reasons below of pro and con of this idea.

Pros (++) Monk Node Wars
By holding this type of perpetual contest:
  1. It would incite some major cleaning up of active users home nodes that otherwise would be cluttered.
  2. It would create some healthy competition, such as the Quests tend to incite.
  3. It would increase home node awareness of home nodes that should be examined thoroughly by anyone that has time.
  4. It would quite possibly mean that there would be a lot of updated home nodes, with fresh items ( or fresh meat ) for other users to gaze upon.
  5. It would be much fun for those who would like to participate.
  6. It could inspire (or strengthen,) friendly rivalries.

Now, if this contest were to become a reality, it could go different paths in the road of finality: It could either become it’s own section eventually, like the Quests section has become, but more than likely, it will just become a small item brought up in various discussions. If this idea materialized, it would be a good thing to be perpetual, say every week, or every 3 days or so, to keep things interesting. That way, if a Perl Monk did not win for a certain time, they would still have a chance to win later in another round.

Also, it would be a good idea to choose select Perl Monks that would like to be official judges in the contest, even though the bulk of the votes would be decided by the people, because this contest is of course, for the people :-). Of course, if Monk Node Wars were to happen, it would be a good idea to post all of the winners in the different categories, and now I come to the idea of a reward, or an award.

The rewarding system for this contest could very well be extra XP for each winner, but I would not be sure how much each winner should be entitled to. In fact, it might be a good idea to have different amounts of the prize for each separate round, that way it would almost be like a small lottery without having to waste money :-). As well as a reward, I think that an award for each winner’s home node should be expected, and I would be able to create some awards with pictures, or some such, that would let other people know that their home node won in a Monk Node Wars round. By including this rewarding/awarding system, it would help create more of a friendly competition to the otherwise (extra work) of another contest.

Cons (--) Monk Node Wars
By holding this type of perpetual contest:
  1. It would take time and effort to update the different winning categories.
  2. It might distract newer Perl Monks from actually learning Perl if they only wanted to have fun all day in the monastery :-).
  3. It could possibly be tampered with if certain Perl Monks were unhappy with results of not winning a contest (not likely, but a point to be considered.)
  4. It could create the thinking that this would incite uniformity of every home node.
  5. It could inspire vicious rivalries.

It is true that this type of contest would take time and effort on the behalf of those that would like to moderate it, or help create it. But I argue that the overall fun and form factor of this type of contest would secretly be helping the visual side of Perl Monks home nodes, by having them take time to clean them up, but keep the same great tasty information they currently have. I noted that this type of contest could make people think that their home nodes HAVE to look a certain way, or just like all of the other ones. This is definently not what I would want to ever happen. I encourage wholeheartedly the use of originality to a point. If one didn’t want to participate in this type of contest, by all means, they don’t have to. This would purely be for sport or fun, rather than be a requirement of a Perl Monk naturally.

After weighing both a few of the pros and cons of this new idea, I would definently say that I am biased towards the good side of this idea (the pros.) I think overall it would not hurt the monastery to use this idea as a means for fun with home nodes, and through all of the fun and games, it would be cleaning and making some home nodes nicer than they previously were. Not everyone would want to take time out of their busy day to participate, but I understand that, and this would be for those that do have a little time out of their day to participate.

There are also many other variables and details to consider with this idea, as I haven’t gone into details yet, since this is still just an idea and not a reality (yet.) I hope that anyone that might be remotely interested in either participating in the future, or helping me with details or petitioning it, would reply to this node, with some ideas, concerns or comments in relation to this idea, of Monk Node Wars!

I thank anyone here that has read through this whole article, it took me about 30 minutes of typing, and an hour of thinking to produce this idea :) I have been considering it for a long time now, and now is the time to speak.

Please vote ‘yes’ for Perl Node Wars :-)!
