Tipping is a culturally dividing phenomena. In some parts of this world, paying some optional (but expected), discretionary (but socially narrowly defined) percentage of the bill for your food, to the house, for them to divvy up according to some (usually wholly inequitable) formula, between everyone front of house (and sometimes those in the back) -- often including those you feel do not warrant a tip -- in lieu of paying them a descent wage; is the $NORM. In other parts; tipping is a genuinely discretionary gratuity, paid by you to that or those persons you feel are deserving of it. The weird part is that most everyone in those former parts can see the inequities; but they blithely continue to perpetuate them anyway.
