Catchy title, eh? For a while now I've seen various people bash perl 6 for a variety of reasons. Some of the ones I can think of right off are:

  • Perl 6 is taking too long
  • Perl 6 is too much like Java
  • Perl 6 isn't Perl 5
  • Perl 6 is being designed by committee
  • Perl 6 is suffering from the second-system effect
  • Perl 6 is hurting Perl 5 by consuming resources

Personally, I think these people lack a sense of history because Perl 5 is the only Perl they've ever known. I could be wrong about that though.

So what I'd like to do is collect all of the die-hard Perl5er's objections to Perl 6 with the eventual aim of condensing them into a set of questions to present to the people working on Perl 6 in a "respond to these objections" sort of way.

What do you think is wrong with Perl 6? And, equally important, why do you think so?

Cogent arguments favored over specious arguments of course ;-)

to format your post; it's "PerlMonks-approved HTML":

  • Are you posting in the right place? Check out Where do I post X? to know for sure.
  • Posts may use any of the Perl Monks Approved HTML tags. Currently these include the following:
    <code> <a> <b> <big> <blockquote> <br /> <dd> <dl> <dt> <em> <font> <h1> <h2> <h3> <h4> <h5> <h6> <hr /> <i> <li> <nbsp> <ol> <p> <small> <strike> <strong> <table> <td> <th> <tr> <tt> <u> <ul>
  • Snippets of code should be wrapped in <code> tags not <pre> tags. In fact, <pre> tags should generally be avoided. If they must be used, extreme care should be taken to ensure that their contents do not have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor intervention).
