Okay, some of what I might say will only make sense to people who've been here for a while, but I think you'll get the idea.

    • I miss the old-style server error messages. I laughed my head off (ha, ha, thump) the first time I saw one.
    • Do you know where to find "sexisgood"?
    • I know what mt2k means.
    • The scratchpad used to use "This pad be public. Scratch it." Now it has the politically correct "View It". Boo, hiss!
    • On one of my applications at work, if you try really, really hard, you'll find submit buttons named "stumbit".

I want the quirks. I don't want to succumb to the bland "we must not offend, irritate, or confuse" mentality. I want people to surf this site and say "hey, what's that?" about the site itself, or the people therein, not just the content of the nodes. These things add to the character of Perlmonks. No, not everyone will appreciate them, but as I've said before, the definition of Utopia is a place someone is guaranteed to hate. Keep the quirks. They're a friendly reminder that people are behind this, not just some faceless corporate entity.

    Cheers,
    Ovid

As for "This pad be public. Scratch it.", the main complaint motivating that it be changed was that it was too long. The current "View it" was not chosen with any regard to being politically correct, mostly just short. Unfortunately, it is harder to be quirky "on demand" so no short but still quirky replacement was found.

As I've said before, I'm all for "quirky". I haven't heard anyone advocating "we must not offend, irritate, or confuse" get taken seriously. I do try to avoid too much of those characteristics, but I also enjoy intentionally including such when I come up with something that "strikes my fancy". In fact, I've added quite a stash of quirkiness that no one has noticed (making it obvious just isn't as much fun). Though, Ovid, you'll have to log out in order to enjoy this lastest trickery.

I guess those predate me. ): Anyone care to reproduce one from memory for us new members?

Don't touch that. This is my vote!
All the submit buttons of my intranet are "STUMBIT"'s.
I really like it, you see :)

    Brother Broomberg,

Before delving into mysteries beyond your understanding, I would recommend a period of quiet reflection upon the writings of our most noble brother Erudil.

    Dear broomberg,

Welcome to PerlMonks. This is an assortment of odd folk who love Perl.

As such you will occasionally note a few in-jokes. The 'Stumbit' button is one, and I leave it to your (no doubt) considerable imagination to find the others.

We (if I may speak briefly for a few) like it. You'll never find a 'Stumbit' button on a Microsoft or Oracle web site. It makes us smile. So smile with us :) and enjoy this very cool, ecelectic community.

ps I ++ed your node to try and help you out. Fellow Monks, use a vote to bring this newcomer back to at least 0 on this node!!

All right, if stumbit was in the Perl Monks FAQ, I might be able to see all the downvotes broomberg's getting as justified, but... jeez, people, lighten up. Most homework posts don't go down this hard.

I'm a spelling freak, so everytime I see it, I freak out. I mean 'stumbit'? It just sounds wrong.
