Not really news but I didn't know where else to put it. Today's UserFriendly.org combats the Russian businessman who has copyrighted the smileys by using Perl.

    AFAIK he has registered :-) trademark, it's not the same as copyright and it's valid only in Russia. So you can still smile for free ;)

    According to Russia Today, "Russia’s patent authority, Rospatent, has ruled that the smiley graphic cannot be registered as a trademark."

    Unfortunately, the smiley used in the comic is not syntactically valid. ;-)
