Noticed a Repainting the Monastery blog post from tudorconstantin of cluj.pm on Perl Weekly today. Curious that he didn't post it here... or maybe he is planning to do so.

Well, one of the reasons I didn't posted here is because I didn't had an account until last week. First time I tried to create an account (2 years ago), the sign-up process didn't worked out for me.

I mocked up the gods page because that was the page I had open when I decided to do the face lift exercises. Indeed, a page with threaded discussions and some code on it would have been a more fortunate choice.

From what I understand in this thread, lots of people see benefits in redesigning the site - what I can't seem to find is some good reasons for not doing it.

If people in charge would give me access to perlmonks codebase, I'd take time and do it myself. Regarding the final theme, I think a poll would be more than welcome

        Funny that

Maybe you should read more closely the discussions I and others (especially the OP) linked, and note when tye and other gods or pmdev are talking -- sure its a lot of stuff, but its a lot of stuff :) for example Re: Why PM does not need web stats, Re: RFC: PerlMonks above the fold navigation (size)

I don't have a node handy that explains how it all works ( PerlMonks FAQ, Can I get the PerlMonks source code? ) but it is unlikely you could join gods , even pmdev has requirements you currently don't satisfy

Reducing or eliminating borders did look nicer/less cluttered. Edit: Any good CSS editors out there? Does Dreamweaver come with one (I have an Adobe Creative Cloud subscription, though mainly for the graphics apps [now if they would just buy out Painter.... ])?

I would be in favour of some redesign but that doesn't look any better.

At the very least we should lose the hokey Monk Pics from the banner. We also have some nicer themes that we could use rather then the default (very) dark blue.

Settings Nodelet:  Display Settings -> Theme Configuration -> Monk Pictures off: -> check.

      :-)

(But I would miss them if they weren’t there.)

Yes I know. :-) I have that setting on for years and I also use the Red Theme so PerlMonks looks fine for me.

In fact I'd completely forgotten about those monk images until I saw them in the linked article.

I still think they should be off by default though. They look amateurish. But perhaps that is the look we are going for.

Why repaint? Is this like someone trying to give people busy-work? There is nothing else to do, so lets paint the kitchen. :-)

"everything that is more than 10 years old in IT is completely irrelevant"

Here's the history of the front page of a little search engine company that's about 15 years old now: a little history

    Hmm...

Well, I'm not very keen on the dark on dark title bar, but overall, his 're-design' looks pleasant on my eyes. The 'roundiness' looks good but I can't help feeling that it's a style flavour that's going to look like last year's suit before too long. But what do I know.

However, I have to take exception to his comments about the fonts being too small.

On my monitor the fonts are just right (unlike so many other websites). My 'gods' node doesn't display anywhere near the number of characters per line that his image shows as default. In fact my page font is even bigger than his revised 'large' font fix. So he's taken what appears (to me) to be a properly sized font, and increased it yet more, and then padded the sides of the page with yet more wasted white space. Now granted I'm not using the largest monitor in the world, but it's not the smallest either.

Is this what the web has come to? This website sucks because I can't read it on my jumbo monitor?

The contrast feels rather low to my eyes, especially on the lighter-blue links. It reminds me of firebirdsql.org whose re-design was IMO a disaster but my artistic friend liked the result. (The old web site (web.firebirdsql.org), however, did very much look like something from 1998, with tacky WordArt and everything. (Perhaps removing the WordArt would've been sufficient.))

What's disturbing me about the mock-ups is the size of the top navigation bar. Even the smallest one of them takes one quarter of the vertical space of my browser window. (The largest, almost half.) And it's sticky.
