Just this morning I was thinking about the need for "use strict" propaganda--reading enough posts here with stern remarks about "strict" has finally given me religion. :)
To this end, there needs to be a large, colorful, persuasive poster. I was imagining a WWII-style illustration after the fashion of the old "Buy War Bonds!" and "Keep 'Em Flying!" posters: several clean-living, cheerful, patriotic-looking souls (or, in this case, perhaps it'd have to be several decidedly unkempt-looking geeks who clearly haven't had much sleep) gazing confidently off into the distance, with "use strict" in very large letters floating in the sky above them.
So, find an illustrator willing to do all of that work for almost nothing :), and put the poster on the wall in the kid's room. Right near the crib. Start 'em out young, I say.

perhaps one of those good ol' Uncle Sam type posters. with Larry Wall/merlyn/vroom/monk-of-choice standing there in the uncle sam garb pointing at the viewer with a caption entitled:
"I want you to use strict;"
just a suggestion.

Yeah! and at the top it should read, "#!usr/bin/perl -w"

Perhaps reuse some of the "Soviet Socialist Republic of Perl" imagery from ActiveState...

Don't know how much help I'd be for writing it, but "My First Perl Book" is an awesome idea! Wish there had been such books 30 years ago 8^P Let me know if you pursue the idea. I'd pitch in somehow.

jjhorner, that was *really* nice of you to offer - especially
that I find myself dreaming of helpful neighbors, who would
offer to cook for us for a couple of weeks ;) .
Interesting idea about the book. We were discussing with
my husband the importance of early introduction to science -
especially mathematics. My mother was studying in university
when I was a toddler, and she used to spend a lot of time with
me, explaining what she's doing :) , teaching basic arithmetics etc.
It seems to me that made a huge difference in my life,
particularly in my thinking ability and interest in studies.
How would one start teaching a child programming languages?
I was introduced to computers late, and have no idea
when and how I'll teach Adriel computing.

`My first Perl book' is a great idea! When I was about 8,
I had a book along the lines of `My first BASIC book',
but I would have much rather learned Perl than BASIC.
I'd be willing to pitch in somewhat if you decided to keep
going with it. =)

'My First Perl Book' takes me back to those heady days of summer, seven years old banging away at the keyboard typing in BASIC on my Commodore 64, making the sprites move around the screen, peeking and poking the memory...reading my Programming for Kids book. MAD magazine came out with an issue that had code for the Commodore and the TRS-80 and others to make Alfred E. Neuman's face show up on your screen...*sigh* what good times. | [reply] |

I've been doing a little research into children's books.
I am thinking that a good way to go would be to use a cute
cuddly little camel as the hero of the book (I'm not going to
name him Joe), and the book will rhyme, with about a stanza
per page, with a cute background.
I'll let you all know when I will need the help, because I
will need help.
