Books about a post-apocalyptic world because they would just be books about current affairs or history books.

Since Romans made ice cream, you could probably make some. First, send some slaves to the top of a nearby mountain to get snow....

I would have checked "all of the above" but the choice wasn't there.

    Bacon Sandwiches

A post-apocalyptic world without bacon? What kind of apocalypse is that?

Electricity, because all of the things on that list rely on electricity in some way.

          Electricity,

Locally (really locally) you could produce electricity in any one of a number of ways.

The real issue is going to be the infrastructure that connects us one to another.

I voted for clean water but after thinking about it some more,I'd like to suggest another "other" I might actually have voted for.

I think what I would miss most would be social order. I like living in a society where I am safe and I don't have to use violence to protect myself, my family or my property. As a civilized townie I don't know I would be able to become what I would have to in order to survive in a post-apocalyptic world.

      You might surprise yourself.

Sorry if I'm getting a little too serious but there's no doubt in my mind: Clean water. Just ask any of the millions of people in the world that don't have clean water today. It may be hard to imagine but without it, none of that other stuff matters. At all.

-- Time flies when you don't know what you're doing
Perversely, I think it would be such a huge problem, that it wouldn't be a problem for long... Either you don't get it, and you get sick and die, or you survive the first 6 - 18 months, and drinking water will be available again. Probably without the convenience, abundance and quality, but I think those things would follow.

It seems to me like it would take much longer to get CPAN fixed or start making new episodes of Futurama.

The real hot shower that I take each morning ... and, when coming in contact with other post-apocalypse-survivors, probably deo-sprays.

Creating a solar shower is not that hard. Unless somehow in a post-apocalyptic world solar power doesn't work any more...

Wish this poll had by a multi-select. Cold beer and coffee were the top of my list with equal stature. Admittedly I could get used to warm beer or could learn to store it in a root celler which wouldn't be refrigerator cold but "cool." Since I brew my own beer as long as I can find barley, hops, water and yeast I can make beer.

Coffee on the other hand would be an issue in the long term. Once the supplies "in the pipeline" were depleted my beloved life giving beverage would be sorely missed.

    .... after the apocalypse?

Since I'll be dead, I'll definitely miss the completion of Perl 6...

But hey, at least those folks that survive will eventually get to see it, right?

C'mon guys, toilet paper should top this poll! Think about it. You poop a lot. Considering what you would be eating in a post-apocalyptic world, you're really, really going to miss a fresh roll.
Actually, there would be a lot of toilet paper around. Currently it is called "paper money"...

Given that "apocalypse", used in this sense, stems from a reference to the cataclysmic end of the world as described in the Apocalypse of John ("apocalypse", after all, is simply Greek for "revelation")... how about:
sorrow, pain, and death. Revelation 21:4

Cats. (Well, they'd still be around, but they'd likely be in charge of everything and I wouldn't get to cuddle with them as much as I've grown accustomed to.)

Cats would still be around but wouldn't have captions.

Re: What would you miss the most in a post-apocalyptic world?

Most postapocalyptic worlds I've seen simulated so far had at least some kind of monastery to hang out in, even if its other inhabitants are often less than helpful and usually need to be blown into a fine red mist. So it probably comes down to CPAN and toilet paper.

Yesyesyes, clean water, that's a close third of course. Living in a place where tap water has over 10 times the concentration of harmful bacteria than the WHO-recommended maximum for public swimming pools plus a *cough*healthy pinch of salt I know a thing or two about clean water.

Gotta say it... I just had a taste of what a post apocalyptic world would look like.

The Frankenstorm Sandy hit the New Jersey Shore and wreaked havoc and chaos on the area. I was one of the lucky ones given that I had no damage to my property. We lost lights the first night of the storm and were lucky again when we got power back three days later.

On one hand the empty shelves in the stores with people buying everything in sight whether or not they needed it (a 72 inch plasma TV? REALLY???), the long lines at gas stations so folks could run their generators, other miscreants cruising neighborhoods listening for the tell tale sound of a generator running and stealing them.

On the other hand the folks that came together to help each other out sharing what they had with one another out of their own need.

If Frankenstorm wasn't enough a Nor'easter came through a week later bringing more havoc, destruction and power outages on a weary population. Again there were heroes and zeros either helping each other or in the case of the zeros looking out for themselves at the expense of others.

My family and I got lucky again and only were without power for three days. We lost everything in our refrigerator and freezer but managed to feed ourselves and others before the stuff went bad.

So, you can never tell what you'll miss when the apocalypse comes. (Notice I say when not if!) I found it was the simple pleasures. Taking a shower and not freezing my butt off when I stepped out. Being able to read past 5PM in the evening. I did miss the technology but found I could function very nicely without it.

    Stepping off my soapbox now.....

Definitely I'd miss perl6 apocalypses in a post-apocalyptic world, which is slightly self-serving if you believe the world might just end when perl6 is finished.

Electricity gives you many of the other things. I would say that it's probably the single most useful item. Toilet paper comes in a close second, though.
