Job Posting Section?

by lvanhout (Curate)
on Jul 16, 2004 at 00:00 UTC ( [id://374852]=monkdiscuss: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

Would it be of any value to have a Job posting section? I did a search for the topic and found references to jobs.perl.com. I would think it would be nice to have a section where monks could put jobs they know about and could put links or contact info, etc. It would be most useful for jobs not found at jobs.perl.com.

I'm currently looking for employment, so this topic is at the front of my attentions. Curious about others opinions.

Better than a section: a nodelet ticker.

IMHO, I would find redundant having both things here and at jobs.perl.com. The best solution would to have a nodelet ticker to display them from the rss feed provided here.

Since the user settings allows you to customize the nodelets layout, you're able to have it displayed or not.

Sure it would -- except there already is a great resource for perl job listings. You can visit jobs.perl.org to see what's available.

As I said in Re^2: Recruitment Q? (hole/dike?), I'd agree except that once you start letting jobs postings in, you'll soon be inundated with jobs postings; at least that has been my experience on more than one occasion.

How about instead we ask people who want to let fellow monks know about some job or who are looking for jobs put the information on their home node (with dates) and those who want to look for such can use super search to find [x]Users that mention "job_offer" or "need_work"...

We should have 'Jobs (Offsite)' in the section titles and have it link to http://jobs.perl.org.

    Lane,

Good idea, but as you've seen, jobs.perl.org already has that covered, and I think that makes sense. IMO, each web site within the Perl community should cover a topic, but not so broadly that it starts to duplicate another web site's expertise. Adding a jobs section to PM goes beyond its vague mandate of providing technical and community resources for Those In Search of Perl Knowledge.

And I know what it is to be unemployed. Drag. Keep looking, though! Turn those stones over -- make sure everyone you talk to knows you'er looking, and also what you're looking for. It'll happen if you keep poking and prodding!

I downvoted your node. Then I read it. Sorry. I agree that we need something more than jobs.perl.org.

Another option for a job seeker is to look for other monks in their local area and message them if they know of any job openings...

Yet another option would be contacting your local Perl Mongers club and trying to find any leads there.

I agree that we need something more than jobs.perl.org.

      Why? (he asks curiously)

I don't see the advantage of making employees find and post to two locations, and have job hunters have to look at two sites?

        Why? (he asks curiously)

Because jobs.perl.org does not allow job hunters to post resumes.

I don't see the advantage of making employees find and post to two locations, and have job hunters have to look at two sites?

Most employers/job hunters already look at several websites.

I agree with the bit about the local Perl Mongers group - the London.PM mailling list is quite lively with jobs of one kind and another, mostly people passing on jobs at places they work or jobs they have been given the details of but don't want to or can't do. This has the advantage of being fairly localised too

No need to duplicate/take away from jobs.perl.org. I can't imagine an employer wanting to post perl job ad in 50 places.
I was thinking monks posting links to jobs they have seen, more then employers. Thanks for the feed back.
