Real life? I thought typing on a keyboard and staring at a screen was real life.

    L-LL-L--L-LL-L--L-LL-L--
    -R--R-RR-R--R-RR-R--R-RR
    F--F--F--F--F--F--F--F--
    (the triplet paradiddle)

I agree. This real life is an unjustifiable cause. I'm not so sure exactly what real life is. How is it that you don't exist 'online', yet you exist as you type these words. Real is a misconception of what we feel through our senses. Do we not see the pixels on the screen, or is that something from our subconscious? -Sase

I can honestly say I haven't met a PerlMonk that I didn't like. Of course, the only PerlMonk I've met was myself, so I may be a little biased.

That's to jcwren's amazing monk maps I've found there are a few in my neck of the woods (Northern Jersey), even exchanged words with jptxs on location since we seem to be within 10 minutes of each other, but never actually met any others in the flesh.

Not that I wouldn't mind to - it'd be fun. Maybe this is a good time to try to organize a monk gathering in North NJ. Anyone interested/have a good place to do it?

Oops, I miscounted. I said 6-8 but I forgot about a few. Here are the ones that I remember meeting, in order of meeting them feel free to remind me if I have met you and don't remember...
    1. merlyn
    2. abigail
    3. vroom
    4. neshura
    5. cogent
    6. schwern
    7. gnat
    8. princepawn
    9. ctweten
    10. There was another monk at Damian's talk in NYC for the Perl University. I know you were there, talked to you afterwards. I forget who it was at the moment. :-(
I may be missing a few.

I'm not sure if this should be posted here, or a reply to some comments made in the Discussion, but it deals with meeting people/locations, etc. The map by jcwren is amazing... kudos to you on that, but until a recent write-up, i was unaware of it. With the flow of conversation leaning towards a more social evironment away from the computer... how about a very simple, yet helpful page.. with "your screenname, city, state/province, country, email contact, and place for personal comments for all to see about contact information/etc.". Just a thought.. nothing fancy needed, just the basics.

This poll is poorly worded. I have met Lexicon in real life, considering he was my roommate up until about 7-8 months ago. But he wasn't a perlmonk then, so I've met him, but in a completely different context.

Okay, I'm done complaining. Where are the perlmonks from Austin? That's what I really want to know.

    ALL HAIL BRAK!!!

Yeah really. Austin is a huge geek capitol. I know you people are out there. There's almost 3000 CS Majors at the University. I bet I've even been in class with someone reading this right now... -Lexicon

    • vroom - He's more dangerous than he looks.
    • CowboyNeal - You wouldn't like him when he's angry. (I don't know what that means.)
    • CmdrTaco - He's got a mortgage.
    • kurt - I know his brother better.
    • nate - All hail nate!
    • RobOMonk - AdMeister
    • clampe - He's really tall, but not scary.

And the great thing is that I have more write-ups than 5 of them!

Does following someone around in your car, looking through their mail, and staring at their bedroom window all night count?
Did you bump into them by accident and stare at your shoes the whole time? Did you mumble an apology and then lurch off in a panic? Did you spend 15 minutes crying that you had your chance and blew it?

Eventually, I'm going to find out who you are... =)

Does anyone else find it amusing that only 6 people say they have met 12 or more perlmonks in real life? I mean, even if they all overlapped, where are the other six perlmonks?? Are they some hidden cult of non-polling perlmonks? Are they too busy plotting the overthrow of vroom? Or are they all The Evil One in disguise?
You assume that promiscuity(*) is a commutative relation.

      It is not.

One person who has been promiscuous in meeting monks may count as met many who have had few encounters.

      * Definition 2 of course. What did you think I meant?

You obviously haven't read my Geek Code. I think I may need a Definition 3.
I've disabled the Poll node on my page, and there's no other way to submit a poll (only look at the nodes), so all I can do is look at the results. And I imagine I've met 12 or more Perlmonks, but haven't (been able to) vote(d) yet.

So, there's the next Monestary request... give me a URL that lets me vote!

You can always disable the voting booth in your "Non-Frontpage Nodelets" and enable it on your "Frontpage Nodelets" through your user settings. If you are like me, you rarely visit the frontpage anyways (except to vote :)

That reminds me. My wife is on call tomorrow (ie Saturday).

What are you up to? Perhaps we can grab cogent as well?

No can do this weekend. Beaucoup de relatives coming to my house. However, during the week, here's the info:

RiskMetrics is on the 21st floor of 44 Wall Street (the Charles Schwab building). I'm usually in from 9:30 to 6:30, and take my lunch break around 12:30. If you like foozball, you're even MORE welcome.

Well... I was in the same room with her, but technically I never met her. Does that count?
I met him, and now work with him. So that's a total of 1.5!

So far for me, it's one Perl monk, that I'm aware of, and that's Penfold.
I do work with the guy, and pointed out the monastery to him, so perhaps that's a bit of a cheat.. :)
However, I'll be lurking round the Ann Arbour/Milan area of Michigan in mid february, so, if anyone around there fancies a beer with a Brit Monk, then lemme know.. :)

I met mirod at the University of Perl. He's a terrific guy. I saw merlyn from afar, but he looked much too grouchy that day to pester.

Update: Geez 'O Pete!! I forgot I interviewed Saint Larry a couple of years ago at Internet World (the actual interview is in the second half of the program). I hadn't thought of him as a perlmonk, since he doesn't really post here. oops!

Lots (most) of my friends don't even know what Perl is, and would probably think I'm in some kind of cult for frequenting this website. I live in Iowa.. enough said? ;)
What part of Iowa? I'm originally from Nebraska and do get back occasionally. Siggy

A few months ago I was living in wales and pretty sure I was the only monk this side of civilisation (civilisation being defined as something starting at the 'welcome to england' sign' ;))

Now, finally I have moved to london and keep on meaning to go to the london PM meetings.... the problem is I have a telepathic boss, someone who seems to instinctively know when you really want to get away and generates a crisis. *grin* Hopefully one day soon.... ;)

Well, not interior kewlowna - but western canadian. Calgary is where I do my coding. Relatively close :-)

well I had to select zero, but....

will be at Big White 12/28-2/3 skiing....if you ski and/or drink beer, perhaps we can hook up in the village...I have no idea what the distance is (yet) from kelowna...but I do know I have about a 6 hour drive (from Seattle).

I know one Perl monk, me, other than the people I used to work with (at Zeus Technology Limited who got me started on Perl) whose online names I don't know either. There isn't even a .pm group in Cambridge, UK.

Any Perlmonks in Cambridge UK want to meet up for a beer sometime? /msg me.
