PsychoSpunk, I am not saying that a discussion of the relative merits of two different ways of doing something isn't appropriate. Unfortunately, that is not how the original post appears to my eyes. Though it easily could have been written in such a fasion, instead it appears as a defensive position for an article not published here, against a criticism, also not published here. This kind of defensive posturing is hardly conducive to open minded discussion and more like a pissing match (even if only one party is actually pissing). If princepawn merely wanted to open a discussion about the relative merits of DBIx::Recordset vs. DBI, and evangelize the former, why bring in the excess baggage of the article and criticism in the first place (because, it appears, he didn't come to open a discussion about DBIx::Recordset vs DBI, he came to defend his article -- and his follow-up to chromatic looks like more of the same). I don't know about you, but thus far I haven't seen anything really new here beyond arguments for, and restatements of, the original perl.com article's content. I am glad you find it so fascinating though.

danger, not having seen the initial post on the mailing list that spurred this is why I feel this is a better forum.

If we are to choose between the two sides, it's better for us to understand the complaints of each side. If this means restating that which has already been stated, then it is a necessary evil to endure for those who have seen every step previously taken.

princepawn has chosen the items he wishes to address, and although I am not going to argue that he is not being combative, I am going to state that it seems that he's not trying to instantiate a pissing contest beyond the scope of his article's arguments. (What exactly constitutes the difference between a pissing contest and an argument anyway?)

His article does, by its nature (and obvious outcome that has brought us here), induces discussion about the two, and of course he's going to take a defensive stand on his beliefs regarding all of this. I don't think you've given him or this thread enough time to get to the point. (And princepawn has a tendency to be a bit abrasive until he wins or loses).

So yes, given that chromatic takes him to task, or that princepawn provides useful information that proves his point, this thread is fascinating, given that I like to be aware of solutions that I use in my everyday life. I am siding on the DBI camp right now, simply because I use it and would have to be convinced that princepawn's solution is better. I am not convinced because of my own complaints about the technical details stated in the perl.com article.

I hope you can understand my fascination now. It's not one of awe, but more of technical value. When you have a schedule that doesn't leave time for infinite research (I'm reading other technical things right now and really don't think that the Recordset has been proven to me, so why go spend the requisite 2 hours becoming intimately familiar with it?), these types of Meditations can act as sidebars to supplement your plan.
