Turn off automatic loading of images(in your browser preferences) is one thing. Maybe you can turn off the Chatterbox in your home node preferences too.

you can even turn off most of the nodelets, and the top navigation. for the most important links you can use the free nodelet.

What I noticed earlier was the overall length of the page; that is, loading all the messages before the submit-new-post box.

When browsing from my GPRS mobile, I use /bare/index.pl, which is a version of PerlMonks without all the fluff. No nodelets, no navigation bar, just plain content. I have some bookmarks for the CB, just_chat and just_search (I think). In addition, I have images switched off. With these, browsing through a slow connection is almost agreeable.

As far as making the pages smaller, not loading images as zentara says is probably the most significant thing you can do.
You might want to test to see if Perlmonks itself will serve your request significantly faster if you remove some of your dynamic nodelets (or, heck, even the static ones).

Googling got me to this.

I think the site is also just slow. I have been coming here for a while now with a 56k dial-up and i often have headroom left; also, for one reason or another, i have to completely restart ppp occasionally after PerlMonks becomes "unreachable" even if other connections are fine. | [reply] [Watch: Dir/Any] |

I've noticed something like this too. If I visit http://www.perlmonks.org, where my cookie doesn't exist, the site loads quickly. However, if I visit http://perlmonks.org, where my cookie does exist, it loads significantly slower.

Turning "all nodelets off" maybe speeds it up slightly and gives you the entire screen width. But then you need something lite like THCB to chat, which runs independent of the browser. | [reply] [Watch: Dir/Any] |

One wonders where on a yak one can plug-in the phone ja(c)k?

OP wrote that, "from the back of a yak", so there's probably a socket in the vincinity of the back somewhere.

That sounds like something Ogden Nash would have fun playing with.
The one-l lama, he's a priest.
The two-l llama, he's a beast.
But I'll bet a silk pajama
There's no such thing as a three-l lllama.
