    I want to encourage competent people to give others a chance to answer easy questions rather than just nailing them all.

    If you can make money by answering the questions, that really makes that harder.

    Also the idea of "gating" things, by making questions cost money, would sharply reduce traffic.

    For all those reasons, I would prefer to pay for the current setup than hope I could get paid under a fee system. (The strength of my preference can be seen by the fact that I long ago stopped showing up at QuestionExchange...)
