The perl code I'm most proud of is
    • a small script automating my daily work
    • some production-code used in my company
    • a CPAN-module used by thousands of other programmers
    • an elegant implementation of a complicated algorithm
    • a really clever obfuscation
    • my first perl-program
    • a feature deep inside the perlmonks-code
    • my contributions to the perl5/perl6 core
    • at least 5 of the above
    • not existent - pride is a sin
    • something else

Update: Added the option "pride is a sin" according to the proposal of an anonymous monk.
Update2: Added two more options as suggested by Tux. (Actually I liked all of those, but the poll is already very long ...)
      • My contribution(s) to the perl5 core
      • My contribution(s) to the perl6 core
      • My contribution(s) to parrot
      • At least 5 of the above

Again, this would make a great poll for tickboxes. I really like this poll!

Question/Topic: What is the largest number of tests you have created/generated for a single project you have worked on?

    • Test??? There's a test?!? Oh.*I didn't study!!!
    • Tests? What do you mean 'tests'?
    • Tests? I don't need no stinkin' tests-my code is flawless, you insensitive clod!
    • I'm afraid I haven't gotten into testing (yet).
    • I've forgotten.
    • I lost count.
    • I used 'no_plan' so I didn't have to count them.
    • 0.
    • Between 1e0 and (1e1 - 1).
    • Between 1e1 and (1e2 - 1).
    • Between 1e2 and (1e3 - 1).
    • Between 1e3 and (1e4 - 1).
    • Between 1e4 and (1e5 - 1).
    • Between 1e5 and (1e6 - 1).
    • Between 1e6 and (1e7 - 1).
    • Between 1e7 and (1e8 - 1).
    • Between 1e8 and (1e9 - 1).
    • More than 1e9.
    • Someone else (CowboyNeal, paco, NodeReaper, etc.) lost a bet, and paid up by writing the tests for me.

      And another idea:

      • Why should I test? - I post my code to the monastery and let the other monks do all the debugging and validation ;-)
      Rata ;-)

      Nice idea :-)

However I think the poll has too many options ...

      why don't you replace all the options Between 1e0 and (1e1 - 1), Between 1e1 and (1e2 - 1) ... More than 1e9 simply by

      • one or more?

It still might get the fewest votes ;-)

      Rata

How about one less/more than I should have?

The use pragma I would most like to see added to perl is:
    • use indentation;
    • use readable;
    • use maintainable;
    • use varable_names_that_make_sense;
    • use regexp_tutorial_node_visited_before_asking_question;
    • use check_search.cpan.org_for_better_solution;
    • use CowboyNeal;
I humbly suggest you include use telepathy;.

I upped it for the fun factor, but my gut wanted to downvote as it included CowboyNeal, which always triggers a yuck-feeling, and wants me to be able to not only up-vote (select) a choice, but also down-vote a choice in a list of picks.

Any of these pragmas would be needed forcable by perltidy and PBP checks. Scripts that use cowboy-neal like pragmas can then be safely removed from the file system.

Re: poll ideas quest 2010 - more than one pope?
by Ratazong (Monsignor) on Apr 22, 2010 at 07:29 UTC

    Dear monks!

The experience-game is rolling, and in not-so-far-future Ikegami and BrowserUK will reach the magical 100000 points. Three cheers for them!

Unfortunately, this gives us a problem: according to our Voting/Experience System, they would reach Level 28 then - and become Pope. But there can be only one! We must face this problem - and I propose to introduce a new rank starting with 100000XP.

Now this leads us to the following question, which I'd like to solve by a poll:

The new rank below Pope should be called

    • Lama
    • Nuncios
    • Patriarch
    • Evangelist
    • Enlightened
    • Angel
    • Messiah
    • Vice-Pope
    • Honorable Paco
    • violate the Highlander Principle and let us all be Pope!
    • other (please give us your proposal)
    Rata

Update 2010-08-19: Now that both have reached the magical 100000XP (Congratulations for reaching the goal, and thanks for all your support being behind that numbers!), this poll no longer makes sense.

Sorry, I have all sorts of problems with this list.
      • 'Lama' and 'Enlightened' expand into other belief systems. I guess this is OK, but to be fair, we would have to add so many that there would now be about 150 levels.
      • Evangelist and Patriarch would fall well below Apostle, let alone Pope
      • Angel's aren't even human, and are on a completely separate track
      • As there is only 1 Messiah, this might be a good candidate to put above Pope, with the current Papal restriction applied (and removed from its current title)
May I humbly submit the following possibilities:
      • Whenever there is more than one eligible, we lock them in a room until white smoke comes out. The losers (if they are still alive), drop back to apostle again (and hopefully learn better hand-to-hand tactics) Perlmonks could probably afford top-of-the-line servers if we sold the rights to this to the UFC for PPV
      • Popino - "little Pope"
      • Pope of Greenwich Village
      • I'm not a real pope but I play one on the Internet
      • The artist formerly known as 'the Pope'

      fnord

As there is only 1 Messiah

        What? Only one? Bloody fascist!

        Enjoy, Have FUN! H.Merijn

There's nothing wrong with three or more Popes, both BrowserUk and ikegami have given of their time, knowledge and experience and are well entitled to the ultimate accolade.

What makes you think there can be only one pope? Once upon a time there were three.

Edit: On the other hand, I rather like the idea of Ikegami and BrowserUK meeting on a mountain top, at dawn, with swords.

      How about Anti-Pope?
Of course, the Pope and Anti-Pope can't ever be in the same room at the same time or the resulting chemical reaction would be disastrous!
Pope of the Western Church, Pope of the Eastern Church, Pope of Perl v5...

Besides, who says there can only be one? This isn't Highlander, you know...

ikegami has now reached sainthood. Congratulations to him.

Re: poll ideas quest 2010 - I like my Perl...
by moritz (Cardinal) on Oct 08, 2010 at 13:29 UTC

    I like my Perl

Ambiguities and overlaps are intentional :-)

I welcome more ideas (but I won't incorporate any "other" or "none" or "all of the above" choices - you must make a decision to participate in a poll).

Update: included three options suggested by Tux++, one by davies++ and one by Arunbear++.

If somebody can get hold of a copy of Perl 0, I'll make the 'archaic' link go there.

If overlaps and ambiguities are intentional ...

      • Standard
      • Compatible
      • Incompatible/Patched
      • Archaic
      • Embedded

FWIW I do like this poll. Might it have beeen motivated by Writing a better Modern::Perl?

Re: poll ideas quest 2010 (most famous person)
by ambrus (Abbot) on Nov 17, 2010 at 11:31 UTC

The most recognizable living person today is…

    • an actor
    • a movie or theater staff
    • an announcer or talk show host
    • a writer
    • a musician
    • an other kind of artist
    • a website or game designer
    • a businessman
    • a sportsman
    • a sports leader or coach
    • a scientist
    • not a scientist though claims to be
    • a religious leader
    • a politician or military leader
    • an activist
    • a royalty

The above works alone too, but you might also do a second poll later similar to the following.

The most recognizable contemporary sportsman is

    • Lance Armstrong
    • David Beckham
    • Roger Federer
    • Michael Jordan
    • Garry Kasparov
    • Michael Phelps
    • Michael Schumacher
    • Mike Tyson
    • Tiger Woods

(I gave sports as the example because that's the one for which it's the easiest to make a reasonably long but varied list of very famous figures.)

Update: added "businessman"; changed Cristiano Ronaldo to David Beckham, for the latter is more famous.

Update: in fact, the second poll (the one about sportsmen) might work alone too.

Update: you may want to add Björn Borg.

Re: poll ideas quest 2010 (toxic metal)
by ambrus (Abbot) on Feb 01, 2010 at 22:19 UTC

After mercury, lead and tin, the next metal that's been fine for thousands of years but is now toxic and can't be used in household objects anymore shall be…

    • Gold
    • Silver
    • Copper
    • Iron

Update 2014-07-10: perhaps nickel could be mentioned in the question as well.

Iron has killed a lot of kids. They don't even put it in children's vitamins in any quantity anymore. I think RPGs should be household items though so just saying.

Hi, I thought the major way that iron (steel) killed was through being turned into knives and guns!! (No that's not a gleeful ! but a :-( ! ) Ish

Good observation.. Have had health issues for many, many years.. Wasn't until giving blood that it started to come together..

My blood reacted anemic in that quickie drop test they do so they spun it in an onsite centrifuge.. Somehow, they determined on the spot that it turned out to have a HIGH abundance of iron, instead.. Reading up on it occasionally is where other health issues finally made more sense, not to mention falls right in line with what you share.. :)

I comment therefore I am (procrastinating elsewhere)..

Let us add Aluminium to the list of the not-so-good metals. Iron, if it is stainless steel, is OK for water, coffee, and tea. I know things are not directly made from it, but Sodium is still used in a lot of products. Thanks. -c

Mercury, lead and tin were not really used a lot to make weapons. Weapons might not be real household appliances, but they do kill :)
Iron and Copper (Bronze) however were used a lot for weapons.

Might have been done before (a quick search didn't turn anything up), but I'd like to see an up-to-date poll on

    What is your favourite/favorite IDE/editor?

(as a Scotsman who lived in Arizona for several years, I can spell with either side of my brain - sometimes)

    Possible options include:

    • What's wrong with vi(m) and command line?
    • Eclipse with EPIC is so shiny and clickable
    • Komodo and ActiveState
    • Padre
    • Ctrl-Shift-Alt-Emacs
    • Text editor and graphical debugger
    • Who needs an IDE - I just do one-liners

I don't want to start a vi versus emacs debate, so please just substitute your own preferred editor there.

I am curious to see what people like to use - probably wouldn't have stumbled onto Padre without the wisdom of the Exteemed Monks

Going through a bumpy bit on the road of life recently made me think .. do I have the right mix of laziness, impatience and hubris? It's an interesting question, and after thinking for a bit I realized my life mix has been wrong.

    But I won't spoil it .. how's your mix?

    • Too much, not enough, the right amount of laziness?
    • Too much, not enough, the right amount of impatience?
    • Too much, not enough, the right amount of hubris?

My C&O is rusty -- that comes up with 26 options, which is kinda ridiculous:

    • more laziness, more impatience, more hubris
    • more laziness, more impatience
    • more laziness, more impatience, less hubris
    • more laziness, more hubris
    • more laziness
    • more laziness, less hubris
    • more laziness, less impatience, more hubris
    • more laziness, less impatience
    • more laziness, less impatience, less hubris
    • more impatience, more hubris
    • more impatience
    • more impatience, less hubris
    • more hubris
    • less hubris
    • less impatience, more hubris
    • less impatience
    • less impatience, less hubris
    • less laziness, more impatience, more hubris
    • less laziness, more impatience
    • less laziness, more impatience, less hubris
    • less laziness, more hubris
    • less laziness
    • less laziness, less hubris
    • less laziness, less impatience, more hubris
    • less laziness, less impatience
    • less laziness, less impatience, less hubris
    Maybe we should use just
    • more laziness
    • less laziness
    • more impatience
    • less impatience
    • more hubris
    • less hubris
and have people explain themselves further in their replies.

Please help. I'm grasping at straws, trying to think of connections between SF writers and Perl / qualities of Perl ...

      • Stanislaw Lem for writing The Cyberiad, coining the term 'constructor' in 1967. Plus, I'm sure at least one of the protagonists (Trurl) used Perl
      • Roger Zelazny for writing Jack of Shadows, where the protagonist uses a computer program to solve a mystical problem. While perl is not mentioned by name, I have no doubt that it would have been Jack's language of choice
      • Larry Niven for a central premise in his Known Space universe, that aliens (in this case Puppeteers) secretly bred humans for 'luckiness', as this was their best trait. Given the number regexp questions asked in SoPW, it was prescient in its validation of "it's better to be lucky than good"

    • Stephen who?

    Update: added the cyborg option.

Update: explanation: the "unimportant" option is for people who believe in duck typing, so this is a programming-related question.

Update 2010-12-02: done: Was Stephen Byerley a robot?

since a cyborg is, by definition, part biological, part artificial, were you being redundant, or did you mean something like 1/4 artificial (maybe his grandmother on his mother's side was a robot)?

      Seriously though, how about

      • Like Data, minus the bad makeup
      • He wanted to be a politician, what do you think?
      • Sort of, he was a Mentat
      • 'I prefer the term "Artificial Person" myself.'
I just couldn't figure out how to work "Danger, Will Robinson" in there...

The Inception dream level I program Perl in is:
    • Level 1: Reality. I maintain legacy code written a long time ago with a team of not-so-great 'programmers'. My manager does not understand software engineering.
    • Level 2: Van Chase: I'm a sysadmin who has to poop out Perl code in a moment's notice to solve problems as they come at me like a freight train down the highway.
    • Level 3: The Hotel: When the requirements change (surprise!) and the team has to scramble I'm the one who comes through, or blows the elevator with C4.
    • Level 4: Snow Fortress: I know my skillset is lacking, so I will make it so hard for anyone to maintain my cargo-culted scripts, that it's gonna take a whole team of experts.
    • Level 5: Limbo: I only want to work on interesting problems where I can actually innovate and control the universe as I see it. In the end, everyone is better off if the "team" is just me and vi.
    • Level 6: Cthulhu
    • Level 7: CowboyNeal's bedroom

The best sketch comedy group ever is/was

    • Stella
    • Monty Python
    • Purple Helmets
    • Smack the Pony
    • Elephant Larry
    • the Perl6 development staff
    • Me and my Monkey
    • other

These options are deliberate and far from complete - feel free to promote better options!

      Only English?

Though my choice would in that case certainly be Monty Python, I'm still missing Benny Hill.

If Dutch sketch groups are allowed, I'd vote for Van Kooten en de Bie.

      Enjoy, Have FUN! H.Merijn

With the development of Perl6, the Monastery should
    • remain as is, concerning itself with both Perl5 and Perl6
    • split into two sibling Monasteries, one for each language
    • split some existing sections into two language-specific versions
    • focus solely on Perl6; every possible Perl5 question has already been asked and answered
    • focus solely on Perl5; Perl6 won't need any questions answered
    • wait and ask the question again in N months
