Item Description: Generate pickup lines in Perl

Review Synopsis: Like the POD says - generates lines guaranteed to get you slapped.

I was advised (jokingly, I'm sure) that I should write a review of this module that's shown up on CPAN recently. I've done my best to bring you the best review I could scrape together.

Bone::Easy does nothing more than generate random pickup lines. What it produces range from the simple to outright explicit. (Let's just say that I'm glad that nobody was looking over my shoulder when I tested it.)

In order to properly test the module, I tried some of the tamer lines on coworkers (and some of the not so tame on my fiancee). The module works as advertised - guaranteed to get you slapped.

One interesting aspect is that the rules portion (Bone::Easy::Rules) is not GPLed - commercial use requires a fee. Just exactly who would use this module (or why) for commercial purposes is beyond me.

I'm not sure what the intended context of this module is - do you run a few iterations before hitting the club for ideas or do you call over that cute girl in the computer lab to read your screen? Either way, you'll be left with quite an impression - hand shaped, right across the cheek.

i think you set up a cron job to send it to wall(1) every few minutes in a busy lab full of female undergrads. maybe crack into a machine at an all-girls' computer science magnet school 8^).

I actually noticed this one as it came across the CPAN nodelet last night. I can't say I d/led and tested it but I did check out the authors homepage... some interesting stuff including Perl book reviews that appeared to have guns involved.

There's also an interesting-looking talk that he seems to have done on Idiotic Perl. I think it would be really interesting if that would be expanded into a book. The first few chapters might address really bad code (as he's already done), and later chapters could go on to address the kinds of things BastardOperator mentioned in Perl secrets. The middle bit would just be stolen from Ovid ;)

Some might wonder who would buy a book of bad programming practices instead of something like Effective Perl Programming. The answer, of course, is anyone who delights finding flaws: the people who talk about how something is historically inaccurate or against the laws of physics during a movie, the people who laugh at typos in books, the people who highlight all the spelling errors I've made...

Well, I'd buy a copy (I'm the one who points out historical inaccuracies in movies).

Hmmm... I wonder if that middle bit would be covering some comments that I've made, or if it would be holding up some of my code as examples of "Idiotic Perl". I don't think I'll make any guesses about that :)

It seems to me that the scariest part of the reviews is the picture at the top.

Just try holding your hands (pretend you have a gun) like that. Would one have *any* sort of accuracy that way?

this module has one purpose, make people laugh

even though it is not one of the most helpfull modules it is one of the funniest, even though it has no real world use someone who is just learning perl will find it easyer to learn from code that makes them laugh than some code that ciphers text, I give the thumbs up for this module not because of its usibility but because of its difference.
